Awesome news!
After three years of rebuilding following the devastating fire that destroyed their beloved restaurant, Gisela Conrad and Chef Yves Rossi are preparing to welcome guests back this June with the reopening of Boccalino restaurant La terrazza.
The slow opening date is set for June 12, initially operating from
3-8 pm (Friday to Monday), with extended summer hours and more elaborate menu as the season progresses. The adjacent boutique motel continues to operate year-round.
La terrazza brings a fresh new vision while staying true to the modern European hospitality and cuisine that locals and travellers have long appreciated. “It’s mainly outside, and that’s why we called it La terrazza,” says Conrad. “The definition is an Italian term meaning terrace, balcony or patio, referring to an open area connected to a building and often used for outdoor socializing, dining or relaxing.”
The new restaurant will offer a smaller, more intimate setting with seating for fewer than 50 guests, centred around a covered outdoor patio and newly custom-built kitchen.
While the format has evolved, the philosophy remains the same. Conrad and Rossi will continue focusing on sustainable, local and seasonal ingredients, with “everything homemade and made from scratch.” Guests can expect a menu that balances casual European-inspired fare with fine dining touches, along with homemade desserts, local beers, nearly all-local wines and handcrafted cocktails.
The pair are also exploring a street-food component aimed at ferry travellers and visitors on the go, offering high-quality, accessible options while maintaining the elevated culinary standards for which they are known.
Conrad says downsizing has allowed them to create something more manageable and personal. “It will be mainly the two of us doing it, which is kind of nice to downsize a little.”
Beyond the reopening itself, Conrad emphasizes the importance of collaboration within the local tourism and hospitality community. “Tourism means promoting everybody,” she says. “The more we have to offer our visitors and guests, the better their experience will be. When local businesses support one another, it creates a stronger destination and encourages people to stay longer, explore more and return again.”
With the return of La terrazza, the region will gain not only another dining destination, but also a renewed example of community spirit, resilience and passion for hospitality.
