Gord Downie’s connection to Northern Ontario ran deep. A special moment captured on the Onakawana River near Moosonee, Ontario, on October 18, 2016 — a beautiful reminder of his love for the North and the people who call it home.

Meet Kat Roy, the incredibly talented local artist behind our beautiful mural! 🎨💜

We’re so proud to showcase her talent at the Best Western Swan Castle Inn. Here’s Kat’s story in her own words. 👇

I am a visual artist and lifelong resident of Cochrane, Ontario. I work with acrylic paint and elements of the boreal forest. Renée Vezeau Beaulieu, owner of the Best Western in Cochrane contacted me about her vision. She wanted to bring the experience of Gord Downie’s last concert into the suite she designed in his honour. I was thrilled to be asked to portray Gord Downie, The Tragically Hip, and Secret Path in the Gord Downie suite of the Best Western.

As a subject, Gord and his legacy are one with the landscape around us. Gord used his voice to represent Channie Wenjack and his fateful story of escaping Residential School. I’ve been honoured to have this chance to get to know Gord and The Hip and Channie with this mural. The Gord Downie suite has a glittering purple record player and several albums to listen to. The music of The Hip played while my husband, Justin Roy, and I worked on this mural. We were inspired by photos of the band in the room. We worked digitally on a sketch and then projected it onto the wall. It was a smooth process, and the music was with us all the way. The mural, done with acrylic paint, has a special application of silver foil, to try to capture the brilliance of Gord’s iconic silver suit jacket.

This has been the first installment of art in the Gord Downie suite. Renée has more meaningful art planned for the Suite and I’m excited to get back to it!
