Everybody thinks they know Halifax. The waterfront, the Citadel, the lighthouse. Drive 45 minutes east, and you'll find out how much of it they've been missing.

Past Dartmouth, the coastline frays into something wild. Granite ridges a hundred meters tall, salt marshes, Acadian villages strung along single-lane roads, and some of the best cold-water surf in Canada breaking on a beach most visitors never think about. No tour buses. No lineups. No waiting your turn behind three hundred people pointed at the same lighthouse.

This is Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore, and my son Dylan and I gave it three days.

We stayed in a geodesic dome above Porters Lake at Nalu Retreat, with a hot tub on the deck and a stargazing loft up top. Chef Kim at Lupin Dining sent us off with lobster mac and cheese and a blueberry swirl cheesecake that we ate outside as the stars came out one by one.

The crew at East Coast Surf School got us both into wetsuits at Lawrencetown Beach. Dylan was riding waves within 30 minutes. I mostly wiped out, spectacularly, in front of him. Worth every second of it.

We biked the Musquodoboit Trailway, ate ice cream among the old rail cars, demolished a seafood platter, and on our rainy last morning found kimchi breakfast wraps at Rose & Rooster in the tiny Acadian village of Grand Desert.

That's what the Eastern Shore has that the Halifax waterfront can't give you. Not better scenery, though the scenery is superb. Space. Space to move, space to breathe, space to actually be with the person you came with.
