Edmonton's historic Fort Road is losing a popular eatery. Transit Smokehouse, known for its delicious BBQ, is moving from the century-old hotel building to a new southside location. This closure marks the end of an era for the northside establishment, which aimed to revitalize the historic space.

This move sparks conversations about the challenges and opportunities facing heritage buildings and businesses in urban centres. It raises questions about economic viability, community impact, and the future of historic architecture in our cities across Canada. Many will miss the unique atmosphere and flavours the Smokehouse brought to the north end.

As communities evolve, the decisions of businesses like Transit Smokehouse highlight the dynamic nature of urban development and the constant need for innovation to keep local gems thriving. What do you think makes a historic building thrive in today's market?

This was sad to see today.

Though we are happy to offer our delicious menu that you selected as the best BBQ in the city in our new location soon on Whyte Ave, we appreciate all of the support we’ve received from those sad that our signature location in one of the oldest and most historic buildings in our city will now be closed.

Though we are hopeful that someone will take it over, realistically it will be hard for anyone to make this location work, and like many other landmarks, this building may not make it too much longer in a city that tends to demolish its history.

We hope that we can serve as a lesson to the city of the consequences of actions that don’t just restrict development (or redevelopment), but in many cases completely prevent it.

This includes with endless permit delays, years of adjacent construction with no support, an inactive/ineffective Business Association, all coupled with one of the most struggling industries in the country right now.

We genuinely hope this building and other historic sites survive, but it will only happen with community, and leadership support.

Thank you North Edmonton!
