My mam , Betty Chute , taught me how to make a bed when I was a little girl growing up in Listowel , County Kerry Ireland .

Many years later , when I was living in Toronto , my brother Thomas came to visit from New York . After I showed him to his room , he looked at the bed and said “ Well , she showed you how to do it “

“ What ?” I asked .

“ Make a bed “ he said .

He recognized our mothers bed making from the other side of the Atlantic .

Thomas passed away in 1995 and my mum in 1994 but I’ve never forgotten that moment . It made me realize that some things stay with us for life .

And that’s how I’ve been making beds ever since .!

Irish writer BRYAN MACMAHON born September 29th 1909 and the story behind THE PEBBLE .

It was the summer of 1975 , I was just 16 and David 17 . We were going on one of our first dates , a walk down by the river Feale .David went swimming and when finished bent down and picked up a pebble that had caught his attention . " Here, this is for you he said , keep it " I went home and put the pebble in a drawer . I kept the pebble through break ups and reconciliations , through an engagement at 19 and a breakup at 20 through David emigrating to Canada and then coming back to Listowel two years later asking if I was ready ? When we finally reconnected and I joined him in Alberta in 1985 I brought my pebble with me . Sometime that year I asked if he remembered our first summer date . He did and remembered the pebble despite not seeing it in over a decade . Christmas 1986 was my time to be surprised , without my knowing he had taken the pebble from my box of trinkets and brought it to The Goldsmith .

On our next trip to Listowel my great friend Bryan MacMahon stopped me on the street wanting to chat about my life in Canada . He commented on the interesting necklace round my neck and was delighted with the story I told him . He subsequently wrote a short story based on the incident which was included in the book A Bakers Dozen , an anthology of short stories and later read on BBC radio . Bryan was a wonderful writer of great renown ( He was one of the founding members of Listowel Writers Week ) and was a great friend and mentor to me.

23 years ago my friend Ian Cameron suggested I call my new business The Pebble . I didn't love the name at the time but over the years I realize how special a name it is . I am so grateful to Bryan and Ian . It has been the privilege of a lifetime to operate my small gem under his provenance

Hard to believe a week has already passed . The house was full of friends , laughter , candles music and celebration as Elizabeth came home to celebrate turning 30 .

Mostly though it was simply lovely having her home — in her own bed with teddy Arthur and seeing the wonderful friends she has gathered round her over the years .

Thank you so much to everyone who sent Elizabeth birthday wishes this weekend . I think any birthday celebrated over four days has to be considered a success .

It was such a lovely few days here at The Pebble - Tash , Paige & Holly travelling from Calgary to experience the Maritimes for the very first time , Emily Mac returning after nine years sice her uni days at Dalhousie along with her oldest & dearest friend Emily C and others gathered around too.

There was beautiful food , candlelight , fires glowing , lots of laughter ….. and by Saturday night , disco lights in the kitchen with girls dancing like nobody was watching .

The very best kind of weekend .

So happy she came home for her birthday.and honestly , I’d do it all again tomorrow .

We reopen on Tuesday .

After a little time away, it feels good to be back — seeing everything again with fresh eyes and quietly getting the house ready .

While I was away, the wooden floors were restained and polished , and new curtains are going up this week — small changes but ones that lift everything.

I’ve come back with a few new ideas too, and I’m looking forward to welcoming guests again , as the season begins .
