My old customer in Kenora, "Peggy" turned 101, over a year ago. I started off waiting on her in the Dress shop I worked at for 9 years. then , later, after my Literacy job was cut, I started cleaning for her and Jean Devlin. I sure miss those old girls, Peggy's grand daughter is an OPP and she married an Emo boy haaa.

I remember this day, in Kenora, I was about to leave my house to go to clean for an elderly couple. and my t.v. was on. Then the phone rang and it was Peggy, the elderly lady. She and her husband were in shock. their family also had ties in the U.S. and back home in Ireland etc. They had come thru the 2nd world war. and this hit them hard. I stayed home too, and watched it the rest of the day. Called my father. We discussed it. Total shock.

On September 11, 2001, U.S. airspace shut down with hundreds of planes still in the air, no runway to land on, no plan for where to go. Canada took them in. Operation Yellow Ribbon diverted more than 200 international flights across the country, over 33,000 passengers in total, landing wherever there was room: Halifax, Vancouver, St. John's, Winnipeg. Thirty-eight of those planes went to Gander, Newfoundland ā€” a town of 10,000 people with barely 500 hotel rooms between them.

By nightfall, nearly 6,600 passengers and crew were sitting on Gander's tarmac, doubling the town's population in a matter of hours. Nobody in town knew who was on those planes or what had really happened back home. They didn't wait to find out. Schools and churches turned into shelters overnight. Bus drivers on strike walked off the picket line to help move people around town. Families opened their own homes to complete strangers, for a shower, a bed, a place to just sit down and breathe.

For five days, Gander fed, housed, and looked after thousands of people it had never met, using whatever the town had. This is the true story behind Come From Away, and it's why so many of those "plane people" still fly back to Newfoundland every single year, just to say thank you in person.

Canada didn't hesitate.
