Avez-vous déjà entendu parler de Maud Lewis? 🎨 Have you heard of Maud Lewis? (English follows)

🌷 Saviez-vous que les trois tulipes colorées près de la porte de La Bluefin sont un petit clin d’œil à Maud Lewis?

🖌️Maud Lewis était une artiste de la Nouvelle-Écosse célèbre pour ses oeuvres colorées et joyeuses. Malgré la pauvreté et la maladie, elle peignait sur tout ce qu’elle pouvait trouver, souvent avec de la peinture de maison ou de bateau récupérée. Son histoire a inspiré le film «Maudie».

🏠Près de Digby, un parc commémoratif marque l’emplacement où se trouvait sa petite maison, et une réplique qui peut être visitée a été construite non loin de là. La maison originale est préservée dans un musée à Halifax.

📖Dans le chalet, nous avons un livre qui montre certaines de ses oeuvres, et un autre qui décrit le déménagement de sa maison à Halifax.

🎨 Une exposition d'environ 80 de ses oeuvres appartenant à des propriétaires privés est en cours à Yarmouth, jusqu'au 20 septembre.

🌷 Dig you know the three colourful tulips by the door at La Bluefin are a little nod to Maud Lewis?

🖌️Maud Lewis was a Nova Scotian folk artist, known for her bright and joyful paintings. Despite living in poverty and facing physical limitations, she painted on whatever surface she could find, often using leftover house or boat paint. The movie “Maudie” tells her story.

🏠Near Digby, a memorial park marks the spot where her little house once stood, and a replica open to visitors was built nearby. Her original house is preserved in a museum in Halifax.

📖In the cottage, we have a book that features some of her works, and another that describes the process of moving her house to Halifax.

🎨 An exhibition featuring approximately 80 of her original, privately-owned paintings is currently underway in Yarmouth through September 20.

A surprising amount of trips to Home Hardware is right! 😂

Everyone always asks me, “Are you taking lots of crafts with you to do at the cottage?” 😂

And the answer is usually yes… but they rarely get done. 🤣

Instead, I spend most of my time making trips to the hardware store, doing maintenance, tackling little projects and getting the cottage ready for the next rental season.

Nobody tells you about the cost of running a cottage rental… 😂🏡

You buy a cottage thinking about sunsets, cozy nights, happy guests and coffee on the deck.

Nobody mentions that you also apparently become the proud owner of:

🧻 A small toilet-paper empire
🧺 An industrial laundry operation
🧹 A full-time cleaning department
🌿 A landscaping company
🔧 A maintenance business
🛒 A very loyal relationship with the local hardware store
💡 An electrical repair fund
🧴 A wholesale supply of shampoo, soap and paper towels
🛏️ A linen replacement program
🧾 And enough receipts to wallpaper the cottage

Then there’s the mortgage, taxes, insurance, power, internet, grass cutting, water, propane, security, cleaning, window washing, opening and closing the cottage, repairs, replacements…
…and all those lovely little “Well, that wasn’t on the budget” moments. 😂

And somehow, the list never ends.
There is always something.

A light bulb.
A leaky tap.
A shower door that refuses to stay on its track.
A deck that needs to be stained.
A clothesline that needs to be put back up.
A shed door that needs replaced.
A mystery stain.
A very determined w**d.

Cottage ownership: where the to-do list reproduces when you’re not looking. 😂
And honestly, we love this crazy little adventure. ❤️

There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to keep the cottage beautiful, comfortable and ready for the next guests, and apparently, a surprising amount of it involves receipts, tools and trips to Home Hardware. 😂

We’re not getting rich sitting around sipping margaritas on the deck…
Although, to be fair, that was definitely part of the original business plan. 🍹😂

So to everyone who books with us, recommends us, leaves a review, shares our posts and comes back year after year…THANK YOU. ❤️

You’re helping support a little dream that comes with a surprisingly large collection of bills, tools, cleaning products and questionable hardware-store purchases. 😂🏡❤️

And every time we see guests enjoying the cottage, sitting around the fire, relaxing on the deck or making memories with the people they love, we remember exactly why we started.

Il y a 38 sites à explorer à votre rythme dans les municipalités de Clare, de Yarmouth et d'Argyle, avec des panneaux d'information sur place et de courtes vidéos accessibles par des codes QR qui racontent l'histoire de chaque lieu.

🗺️La carte est disponible à La Bluefin ou au bureau d'information touristique Rendez-Vous de la Baie à Pointe-de-l'Église. Elle peut également être consultée en ligne sur le site Web de l'excursion.

⭐️The Acadian Shores Interpretive Tour is a self-guided road trip through the area’s Acadian history. There are 38 sites to explore across the municipalities of Clare, Yarmouth and Argyle, with information panels onsite and short videos accessible via QR codes that share the story of each location.

🗺️Maps are available at La Bluefin or can be picked up at the Rendez-Vous de la Baie visitor centre in Church Point. An interactive map can also be viewed online on the tour's website.

🎉Le Festival acadien de Clare bat son plein en Nouvelle-Écosse – et célèbre cette année sa 71e édition, ce qui en fait le plus ancien festival acadien toujours en activité!

⭐De l'expo culturelle aux soirées musicales, en passant par les soupers-théâtre et les activités pour toute la famille, il y en a pour tous les goûts. L’événement se termine de façon festive avec le joyeux tintamarre et le spectacle du 15 août à l’occasion de la Fête nationale de l’Acadie!

⚜️Remontez aux débuts de la Nouvelle-France au lieu historique national de Port-Royal, où vous pouvez visiter une reconstruction de l’Habitation qui a abrité dès 1605 l’une des premières colonies françaises permanentes en Amérique du Nord. L'Habitation a été reconstruite en 1939 à partir des descriptions et croquis de Samuel de Champlain.

Bon à savoir :
🚗 À environ 1 h 15 de La Bluefin
🐶 Les chiens sont admis sur le site, mais pas à l’intérieur de l’Habitation. Comme c’est l’attraction principale, nous avons visité chacun notre tour pendant que l’autre restait dehors avec Rafale.
🎟️ L'entrée est gratuite jusqu’au 7 septembre grâce au laissez-passer "Un Canada fort".
🧭 Visitez le site à votre rythme à l’aide du guide du visiteur remis à l’accueil, ou participez à une visite guidée (du vendredi au dimanche, en français ou en anglais, moyennant des frais supplémentaires).
🇫🇷 Nous avons été accueillis et servis en français à l’accueil.

⚜️Step back to the early days of New France at the Port-Royal National Historic Site, where you can visit a reconstruction of the Habitation that housed one of the first permanent French settlements in North America beginning in 1605. The Habitation was reconstructed in 1939 using descriptions and sketched from Samuel de Champlain.

Good to know:
🚗 About 1 hour 15 minutes from La Bluefin
🐶 Dogs are welcome on the grounds, but not inside the Habitation. Since it’s the main attraction, we took turns exploring while the other stayed outside with Rafale.
🎟️ Admission is free until September 7 thanks to the Canada Strong Pass.
🧭 Visit at your own pace with the visitor map provided at the entrance, or join a guided tour (Friday to Sunday, offered in both French and English for an additional fee).
