Do you really need to speak French to get by in Montreal?

When B.C. native Sienna Palmeri visited with "three French words and a lot of confidence," she quickly got humbled. While her Grade 9 French showed up right on cue, it was limited to words like "jambon," "poubelle" and "concombre" — which, it turns out, offered zero practical application in most interactions.

But she also started noticing something else: whether people spoke English wasn't always the issue — it was how she approached them. Leading with English got a colder response, while a quick "bonjour" changed everything.

Her takeaway? "You can absolutely get by in Montreal without speaking French," she writes. "But the city is not going to go out of its way to make it seamless for you — and honestly, that's part of what makes it what it is."
