Located a short 30 minute drive from Penticton, BC, Apex is a full service destination resort with quality snow, great weather, incredible terrain, and friendly people. Apex being located in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, features the perfect mix between large amounts of precipitation and low humidity that makes for the lightest champagne powder snow imaginable. Smiles stretch from ear to ear, as locals and visitors alike hoot and holler among the glades & open terrain, leaving clouds of powdery snow to lightly settle behind them. With an average temperature of -4 C, Apex receives about 600 cm of dry “Okanagan” powder each season.

It is with very heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our former Patrol Director, Paul Hirschfield, who passed away on Friday October 16th, 2026.

A former smokejumper in the Yukon and NWT, Paul originally joined Apex as a patroller in the late 80's before taking a break for a few seasons. Paul came back to the Apex patrol in 1993, and became Patrol Director in 1997 until April 2019. During that time Paul worked on our trail crew in the summer, and then became an air tanker loader during the summers at the Penticton Airport.

While looking over mountain safety and caring for the well being of all of our guests Paul went above and beyond. If there was an injury on the mountain Paul would follow up with a personal visit to the hospital and make sure the patient had the utmost care. To say Paul was passionate about his job and the welfare of everyone around him, would be an understatement. Paul was loved by all, as was evident by the amount of visitors Paul received during his short time while in the hospital and hospice.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Paul's family and loved ones during this difficult time.

A tribute to Paul will be organized to take place this winter.
