Some adventures are about where you go. Others are about who you get to share them with.
 
To celebrate his 14th birthday, Ilan spent a special day on the river with his dad, David, experiencing the salmon run together. Surrounded by salmon, clear water and the incredible karst landscape, it was a day of adventure, discovery and memories that will live long after the river carries on.
 
David asked Maxwel Hohn to create something special for Ilan’s birthday, and once again, Maxwell brought his knowledge of the natural world, creativity and sense of adventure to make it happen. What started as a father-and-son adventure also became the first outing of a new river experience that we can now share with our guests at Fawn Bluff.

As a cinematographer with a deep passion for the natural world, Maxwell has become a meaningful part of the Fawn Bluff story. From helping us develop our diving experience to imagining and exploring new ways to experience this remarkable place, he continues to bring new ideas, curiosity and a genuine enthusiasm for discovery to Fawn Bluff. We feel incredibly lucky to have him as a friend and are deeply grateful for everything he brings to these adventures.

Late August marks the beginning of the salmon run in British Columbia, as salmon make their remarkable journey back from the Pacific Ocean to the rivers where they were born.

At Orford Bay, this return brings the landscape to life. As salmon gather in the rivers, grizzly bears come down to the water to feed, following a natural cycle that has shaped this ecosystem for generations.

Witnessing this moment from the riverbanks is a powerful reminder of how deeply connected the ocean, rivers, forests and wildlife are throughout Bute Inlet.

A very special day made possible by Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours a Homalco First Nation-owned company, sharing the lands, waters and wildlife of their traditional territory through the knowledge and perspective of the Homalco people.

We are deeply grateful to their team for making this incredible experience at Orford Bay possible.

After a day spent exploring Bute Inlet, on the water, beneath its surface, or high in the mountains, friends gather to unwind on the private beach below the Main House. Nearby, a black bear moves quietly along the shoreline.

At Fawn Bluff, wildlife is part of the landscape itself. A gentle reminder that here, we are simply guests.

Scuba diving at Fawn Bluff is another way to experience the wild beauty of British Columbia’s remote coast.

While heading out for a salmon fishing session or simply exploring the coastline by boat, encounters with wildlife can happen at any moment. Orcas may appear silently beside the vessel, while humpback whales sometimes surface unexpectedly in the distance.

In these waters, nothing is scheduled or guaranteed. Wildlife moves freely, on its own rhythm and that’s what makes every encounter so special.

At Fawn Bluff, time on the water is always approached with respect for the animals, the ocean, and the traditional territory of the Homalco First Nation.
