🍂 Seasonal Update & Exciting News at Choo-kwa Ha-ook Cafe! 🍂

As autumn arrives in Clayoquot Sound, we are preparing to wrap up our regular daily cafe service for the season on October 15th. You have just a few weeks left to drop in, enjoy a hot drink, and savour delicious seasonal bites before we close our doors for winter.

We are also thrilled to share an exciting evolution at Clayoquot Campus!

The incredible Chef Lisa Ahier is shifting her creative culinary focus this Autumn to lead our Long Table Dinners, Group Bookings, and Special Event Catering at the Ecolodge. While regular cafe service pauses on Oct 15th, Lisa will continue crafting unforgettable dining experiences for private gatherings, retreats, and seasonal feasts. ♥️

Stay tuned—we’ll soon be announcing a brand-new rotating Guest Chef/Cafe Operator for next season!

Today, we want to shine a spotlight on Monica, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the IISAAK OLAM Foundation and Clayoquot Campus! We are so grateful for the work that you do for the Clayoquot Campus!

Monica is a strategic, creative leader with a rare talent for turning transformative ideas into real-world impact. ✨

Grounded in reconciliation and mutual respect, she masterfully weaves together Western and Indigenous knowledge systems in Ethical Space, redefining collaborative conservation across Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

Her vision is deeply personal. The "OLAM" in our foundation's name honors her cultural roots and the Jewish ethic of Tikkun Olam—“to repair, heal, or perfect the world.” From raising her family in W̱SÁNEĆ territory to embracing multiple languages and traditions, Monica leads by example every single day.

Thank you, Monica, for your warmth, wisdom, and tireless dedication to healing ecosystems and repairing our shared world. We are so grateful for everything you do! 🌿❤

We have an amazing team of people that make this campus run smoothly, and as the season slows down, we too are slowing down to express our gratitude to those people who make our Gardens, Cafe, and Ecolodge hum!

Say hello to Terry! Terry Dorward (Seit-Cha) - President of the Board & West Coast IPCA Conservation Director!

Terry is a Tla-o-qui-aht leader from the House of Hi-you-eah (Seitcher family). Raised by his great-grandmother, Susan Marshall of the St’at’imc Nation, his lifelong path as a protector began at age 12 during the historic 1984 Meares Island blockades.

• Advocacy & Governance: Decades of direct action defending title and rights, former Tla-o-qui-aht Elected Councillor, and delegate to the Union of BC Indian Chiefs. He continues to support his brother, Tyee Ha’wilth (Head Chief) Ray Seitcher, in hereditary governance.

• IPCA Pioneer: Co-founder of the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Guardian Program and former Tribal Parks Coordinator (2007–2023), helping build an Indigenous-led conservation model recognized globally today.

The Forest’s Guardian - The Black Bear ❤

When you see a coastal black bear foraging along the shorelines of Tofino or disappearing into the dense rainforest, you are witnessing an ancient, sacred relationship. In Nuu-chah-nulth culture—specifically here in the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation—the black bear holds a profound role that extends far beyond just being a wild animal: ✨ As elder Dr. Barney Williams shared, black bears represent the deeply respected virtues of “courage and strength in spirit.”

Historically, the bear is regarded not as prey, but as a teacher and "doctor of the woods"—a wise being from whom humans learned which forest plants and roots to use as natural medicines. Hishukish Tsawalk! We are visitors in their home.

Let's keep Tla-o-qui-aht territory safe for both humans and wildlife.

"As a group of professional artists travelling with our families, the IISAAK Ecolodge provided a wonderful home to us for our week in Nuu-chah-nulth territory.

The staff were relaxed and kind, the rooms looked out over the garden, and the quiet, kid-friendly atmosphere was very welcoming.

The greeting we got allowed us to learn knowledge of the area that was not only practical and helpful for visitors but powerfully situated as a greater understanding of place and Indigenous territory, history and futurity.

The IISAAK OLAM pledge we learned stayed with us - Observe, Appreciate and Act Accordingly - a powerful guide as a visitor to act with respect in reciprocity for all the power from the land people and communities that we visited!"
