Some of the Inn’s most distinctive details were shaped by hand, one adze stroke at a time.

Henry Nolla’s craftsmanship is woven into the character of the Wickaninnish Inn, from the cedar doors to the textured beams and mantels throughout the property. Though Henry passed away in 2004, his presence remains in the work he left behind, and in both the Carving Shed and Gallery that bear his name.

We would have loved for Henry to be here to see what became of the Inn he helped make so incredibly beautiful. We’re grateful that his master craftsmanship still surrounds us today and that West Coast artists he inspired still continue to create in the Shed he built just down Chesterman Beach.

There are still two wonderful months of whale and bear watching ahead.

Through October, grey whales and humpbacks can still be spotted in the waters of Clayoquot Sound, before beginning their southern migration later in the month, while black bears make the most of the season before retreating to their winter dens.

If you’re joining us between now and the end of October, our Concierge would be delighted to help arrange a bear or whale watching excursion. Later in the season, our Concierge can still share plenty of ways to experience Tofino’s incredible wildlife.

"The hippie that all hippies aspired to be."

Every place has its characters. Tofino had Henry.

Free-spirited, unconventional, deeply authentic, and impossible to forget, Henry Nolla was a familiar presence on Chesterman Beach after moving there in the early '70s. So much so, that North Chesterman even came to be known as "Henry's End" to Tofino locals at the time.

Hear from some of our team members as they remember Henry and share a glimpse into the man who's name and legacy continues to live on throughout the Inn today.

As September nears, we'll soon be saying farewell to the variety of borrowed lamps we've had displayed across the Inn in honour of our opening night's "Borrowed Light" story.

If you are visiting us in the months to come, while all these delightful lamps may not be displayed in quite the same way as they have been throughout August, there are other surprises yet to emerge.

We personally cannot wait for the next element of our history that we will be exploring with you. It's something deeply intertwined with the Inn's identity and if you've visited before, you've certainly seen and felt it as well. Any guesses?

Venus (also known as the "Evening Star") shining clear above the Western horizon.

From the Perseid meteor shower peaking last week, to the number of different planets that can be seen brightly dotting the sky throughout the summer months, the lack of light pollution in Tofino creates a perfect canvas for viewing astronomical events on clear evenings.

Chapter One: Borrowed Light

After the endless amount of heart, dedication, and hard work our opening team invested into ensuring the Inn was ready to welcome guests on August 9th, 1996, they imagined that come evening, they'd finally have a moment to pause and take it all in.

But opening night had other plans.

Long before our doors opened 30 years ago, the Wickaninnish Inn began as a dream.

But bringing that dream to life was a story of its own (and not one without its challenges).

Hear from a number of our opening team members who were there from the very beginning, as they look back on the unforgettable days leading up to August 9th, 1996.

Today, August 9th, marks 30 years since we first welcomed guests through our carved cedar doors.

If you have ever celebrated an important milestone with us at the Inn, you may know just how much we cherish making these celebrations as special as possible. We are endlessly grateful for all our guests who have shared such moments with the Inn throughout the last three decades.

In honour of our 30th anniversary, we'll be inviting you, our guests, to celebrate with us. Whether you are staying with us at the Inn in the coming year or you are following along from home, we are very much looking to celebrating with you.

Today is only the beginning 🥂

In just two days, we'll be celebrating 30 years of the Wickaninnish Inn.

After three decades, however, there are simply too many stories to tell in a single day.

So, throughout our 30th year, we’ll be sharing some of them here through The Wick Journal: a series of stories from the Inn’s history, with each month bringing a new chapter.
