It’s the time of year when you’re likely to encounter wildlife and their young near roads in the park. For their sake, for yourself and fellow travellers, obey all posted speed limits and keep your eyes on the road.

This is also a friendly reminder that If you’re cruising around Waterton Townsite, the speed limit is 30 km/hour. Park Wardens use radar, and issue tickets to enforce speed limits in the park.

Driving cautiously, especially at dawn and dusk, gives you more opportunities to spot roadside wildlife. 🐾📷 If you see wildlife, slow down and consider not stopping. Your decision to move on gives them the space they deserve.

Looking to leisurely cruise for some amazing views? Check out these scenic drives: https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/waterton/activ/experiences/conduite-driving

📞 If you see anything of concern, including traffic jams, injured or dead wildlife, call Parks Dispatch at 1-888-927-3367 immediately.

A special visitor stopped by the Kilmorey Lodge this week!

One of Waterton's resident owls decided our balcony railing was the perfect place to rest, take in the view, and maybe find its next meal below!

Moments like these are another reminder that sharing the landscape with incredible wildlife is a part of the magic of Waterton Lakes National Park.

Have you ever spotted an owl during your visit?

Although we didn't get a good look at its face and it is difficult to make out any horns, we're thinking this is a Great Horned Owl. Large and bulky, mottled brown and gray plumage, regularly seen in Waterton. Possibly a Barred Owl, but leaning towards Great Horned Owl.

The Iron Bear Challenge Month 6: June

Six months down. You're halfway through the year, Iron Bears!
June in Waterton is pure magic. Long sunny days, warm trails, and wildflowers blooming everywhere you look. Bear's Hump is at its best right now. The lake is that impossible shade of blue, the peaks are shedding the last of their snow, and the whole valley feels wide open and full of life. This is the Waterton you've been waiting for all winter.

Halfway through the challenge is no small thing. Whether you've been at it since January or you're picking up steam, six months of showing up and earning that summit view says a lot about who you are. Keep it going.

Before you go: June brings warm temperatures, but Waterton's winds can still catch you off guard. Bring a light layer and plenty of water. The trail is in great shape this time of year, but it can get busy on weekends, so an early start gives you a quieter hike and cooler temps. Sun protection is a must. Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen. The summit has zero shade and you'll want to linger up there.

New to the Iron Bear Challenge? Here's how to join in:

• Hike Waterton's iconic Bear's Hump once a month, every month of the year (start anytime, one hike per calendar month).
• Snap a selfie or photo at the top each month.
• Post your monthly summit photo to the Kilmorey Lodge page (Send us a message or comment your photo on this post).
• Complete all 12 months, then stop by the Kilmorey Lodge to claim your IRON BEAR t-shirt and your hard-earned bragging rights!

Summer is here and the summit is shining. We'll see you at the top!
