I’m excited about this!

This probiotic ginger ale has become one of the most-loved things I make at Secret Sanctuary. 🌿

I first became interested in probiotic foods after living with chronic stomach pain and digestive issues for most of my life. Fermented foods made a profound difference in my own experience, and this is the ferment I have found easiest—and most enjoyable—to keep making consistently.

It begins with a ginger bug that lives on my counter and is fed daily with:

• 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, with the skin left on
• 1 tablespoon cane sugar

When I am ready to make a batch, I create a strong tea using ginger, cardamom pods and black pepper. I let it gently simmer, sweeten it, allow it to cool completely, and then bottle it with the active ginger bug and fresh lemon or lime juice.

After fermentation, it becomes naturally fizzy, spicy, refreshing and full of character.

My kids love it, their friends love it, and the adults around here have been known to turn it into some pretty delicious cocktails too.

Mentally I’m here.

Turns out, this little escape is closer than you think. 🌲

Just about an hour southwest of Edmonton, our Tiny Home Cabin is tucked into 80 acres of forest at Secret Sanctuary.

Come slow down for a couple of days. Swing in the hammock, visit the animals, wander the trails, head to the lake, sit around the fire and let the kids have some actual space to play.

And something unusual has happened this summer…

This morning, after dropping my daughter off at the bus stop, I stopped in the middle of the road — completely mesmerized by the sky.
It was still dark, but the horizon was glowing with that soft, magical light that hints a new day is coming.

I couldn’t look away.

At first, my mind kicked in — You should get going. There’s work to do. This is a waste of time.
But something deeper whispered, stay.
So I did.

The last time I remember watching the sunrise like that was back in 2017, when Nic and I were travelling around the world.
Realizing that I’d been “too busy” for something so simple made me a little sad.
So I surrendered. I stayed.

For an hour, I watched the sky shift through every colour of the rainbow.
It was breathtaking — and it nourished something in me I didn’t even realize was hungry.

When I finally walked through the door, beaming, Nic looked at me and asked,
“What’s with you?”
I smiled and said,
“I watched the sunrise… and it was glorious.”

I’m still glowing.
Still radiant.
Still grateful to be alive in this beautiful, crazy world. 🌅✨
