🥾 Black Bear Safety Tips for Hikers 🐻
Makwa (Black bears in Anishinaabemowin) live throughout the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula and are becoming more active this season. Black bears are usually shy and avoid people, but it’s important to be prepared while hiking.
Before and during your hike:
🔹 Keep dogs on a leash to prevent provoking wildlife
🔹 Travel in groups and make noise as you hike—talk, clap, or use a whistle
🔹 Watch for fresh bear signs such as droppings, overturned rocks, or torn‑up logs
If you encounter a black bear:
• Stay calm and speak in a firm, calm voice
• Wave your arms slowly to appear larger
• Avoid direct eye contact and give the bear plenty of space
• Back away slowly—do not run or drop your backpack
Staying alert and respecting wildlife helps protect both visitors and Makwa. Enjoy the trails safely! 🌲🐾
📞 In an emergency: Call Parks Canada Dispatch at 1‑877‑852‑3100 or 911

🚗This message is for everyone visiting or travelling through the Bruce Peninsula this season.

🚧There are a number of active construction projects across the region that will impact travel times. Please plan ahead, allow extra time, and avoid last-minute travel to scheduled tours, ferry departures, or park visits—especially if you are booked on the MS Chi-Cheemaun or heading to Bruce Peninsula National Park.

Please be aware of the following 2026 construction projects:
• Ministry of Transportation Highway 6 (Bruce Road 9 / Ferndale to Lindsay Road 20) – May to December 2026
• Ministry of Transportation Highway 6 (Jenny Street to Isaac Lake Road) – mid-June to July 31, 2026
• South Bruce Peninsula – Berford Street (Highway 6) in Wiarton (George Street to Elm Street) – June to December 2026
• Bruce County Bruce Road 9 – Cameron Road to Cemetery Road – August to September 2026

These projects may result in reduced lanes, delays, and detours throughout peak tourism season. You can follow https://www.municipal511.ca/ and https://511on.ca/ for official road updates, closures, and detours.

A reminder that there is no gas station in Wiarton ❗️Please plan ahead and fuel up in Hepworth, Sauble Beach, or check nearby communities for available services before travelling north.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation, and please travel safely while enjoying the Bruce Peninsula this season.
