Someone had to expose the truth...

Don't panic! The Northern Lights aren't actually shutting down.🌌

While the scientific charts show the peak solar maximum cycle is declining, the lights aren't going anywhere at Blachford Lodge. In fact, solar minimum displays under the auroral oval can be absolutely legendary (just look at the proof on Slide 6!).

The real countdown isn't the sky, it's our calendar. 2027 and 2028 slots are already filling at record speeds because travellers want to lock in their aurora trips early.

Summer at Blachford is for the birds. 🐦

From mid June through mid August, Blachford Lake and the surrounding boreal forest are alive with northern birdlife.

Look and listen for loons calling across the lake, ravens soaring overhead, spruce grouse moving quietly through the forest, and woodpeckers tapping among the trees. White throated sparrows, warblers, bald eagles, ospreys, grebes, and other waterbirds can add even more variety to days spent exploring outside.

Whether you bring binoculars, a camera, or simply keep your eyes open on the trail, there is always something to watch for.

Why are spring and fall such exciting times for aurora hunters?

Part of the answer is something called the Russell-McPherron Effect.

Around the spring and fall equinoxes, the orientation of Earth’s magnetic field becomes more favourable for interacting with the solar wind. This seasonal alignment can contribute to increased geomagnetic activity and stronger opportunities for northern lights displays.

At Blachford Lodge, that makes March and September two especially exciting times to keep your eyes on the sky. 🌌
