Me respondió:
—Sonriente y alegre.

THE WOMAN ON THE STAIRCASE
During the restoration of Matildas, one of the furniture restorers arrived one morning to begin his work.
As he opened the old front door, he saw a very elegant woman walking down this staircase.
She was wearing a beautiful long dress and a wide-brimmed hat.
When I saw him, I asked, intrigued:
—How did she look?
He answered:
—She was smiling and cheerful.
According to him, she seemed happy to see the beautiful restoration we were carrying out in the house.
When I asked him who she was, he had no hesitation:
—It was Matilda.
We never discovered who that woman was.
And, of course, I cannot say whether she really was Matilda.
But the image stayed with me: an elegant woman quietly descending this staircase, smiling and happy to see her home coming back to life.
Perhaps some houses hold more than memories.
Perhaps some people never truly leave.
