Nature Made This Choice 300 Million Years Ago

2018. Hurricane Michael. Category 5. 260 km/h winds. Mexico Beach, Florida — flattened. Except the monolithic dome homes. They looked the same after as they did before.

No one chose a dome because it looked interesting. They chose it because the houses next door were gone.

But humans didn’t invent the dome. An eggshell is 0.3 millimeters thick and supports 20 to 30 times its own weight. A human skull is a bone dome 5 to 7 millimeters thick. Nature converged on this shape long before engineering existed.

What I did was pair the right shape with the right material. Composite is what the dome shape demanded all along — light enough to form a thin shell, strong enough for permanent loads, inert enough to face 50 years of salt, sun, and storm cycles.

If you operate in wind-prone regions, the question isn’t whether the next storm will hit. It will. The question is whether your structures were designed for it.

Wind Is the Final Exam:

A Category 3 storm made landfall three hours ago. The operator drives out at first light, not knowing what he’ll find.

One fabric dome is down. The frame twisted where a 140 km/h gust peeled the skin off like a sail. Two others are standing but leaking. Twenty kilometers inland, another site took the same storm. Their domes are fine —not luck. Their shells have no skin-to-frame attachment points for the wind to work on.

We manufacture composite dome structures in China.
Hurricanes. Blizzards. Sandstorms. Downbursts. Different names, different payloads, one physical mechanism: moving air. A hurricane is wind carrying water. A blizzard is wind carrying snow and ice at 80 km/h. A downburst is wind accelerating straight down and radiating outward at over 160 km/h. The payload changes. The force is the same.

We’ve spent years watching operators discover — usually at 2am during a storm — that their dome’s design philosophy never accounted for wind.

Former chairman Luca di Montezemolo, commenting on the car's distinctive design, said:
"At least Chinese companies won't copy this car."

In 2018, our company invented a composite insulated dome structure, named Marsdome.

A company in Tofield, Alberta became our distributor. They bought our domes. Shipped them to Canada. Copied the design. Made it thinner. Stripped our packaging. Put their own logo on. Sold the same glamping dome across North America — calling it the Astro Dome Series, "Designed and Manufactured in Canada."

The U.S. federal government is now investigating their origin claims. Case number: e000012531. Public record.

Mr. Montezemolo worried about China copying Italy. In my industry, a company in Tofield copied China. The U.S. government is investigating.

We are not asking him to apologize. We just thought he should know.

Why 4 inches.

Our first dome went to the Yukon with 5 centimeters of insulation. We thought that was enough.

The client was Inuvialuit. Her husband's an engineer. They ran the dome through two Arctic winters and came back to us.

5 centimeters isn't enough. Minus 45 with wind. You need to double it.

4 inches. We never changed it.

In the market, a standard FRP dome typically has a shell thickness of only 3mm (single layer) or 50mm (basic insulation). While those might work for simple shelters, we decided to break the mold for our 6m flagship Marsdome.

As you can see from the shape and span of my hand in this photo, our cross-section is a full 106mm (4 inches).

We use a proprietary ultra-high-density polyurethane within this Monocoque structure. While the exact density remains our technical secret, the performance gap compared to a standard 50mm dome is massive:

The 106mm Difference: It’s not just double the thickness; it’s a total transformation in thermal efficiency and structural safety for helicopter missions.
