𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁... 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁? 🐦
Same species. Same throat. All it takes is the light hitting at exactly the right angle — and suddenly plain gray turns into fire red. His scientific name, Heliomaster, literally means "sun-hunter," and now you know why: he needs the sun's cooperation to show off.
That long, straight bill isn't just for flowers, either — unlike most hummingbirds, he hunts insects mid-air from high perches, more falcon than florist.

𝗘𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮... ¿𝗽𝗼𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗲́ 𝗮 𝗺𝗶́ 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗹𝗮 𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝘀𝗶́? 🐦
Misma especie. Misma garganta.

𝗥𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲. 🐦

Some hummingbirds are here every day. The Brown Violetears show up about 7 to 8 times a year, staying for just 3 to 5 days at a time. We always enjoy them when they're back. You can hear them talking. Listen to them.

"Hey, we're a minority here. There are too many Lesser Violetears around here — they're the popular ones, but we certainly are better looking than them. Don't you agree?....."

📸 Photos by Debby Collings.

If you love hummingbirds and you're looking for them around Costa Rica, put Quinta GALEÓN or The Hummingbird Experience on your list of must-stops. Probably 10 to 15+ different species will be welcoming you on any day of the year. Not bad at all!

𝗦𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗼𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲𝘀. 🐦

¿No creen?....."

¡Nada mal!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺? 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? 🐦

Two very different woodpeckers, both regulars at Quinta GALEÓN — most every day, actually. Different attitudes, different looks, same knack for making an entrance. Fun fact: the black-and-white one is officially nicknamed "Payasito" (Little Clown) in Spanish — and honestly, look at that face.

Which one do you think is the dominant one here — the classic look or the clown face?

👍 if the classic looks like the boss to you, ❤️ if the clown face is secretly running the show.

𝗖𝘂𝗮́𝗹 𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝘂 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮? 𝗧𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮 𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲́ 𝗮𝗾𝘂𝗶́? 🐦

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲. 🐦
Hummingbirds cruise at 20-30 mph — but in a display dive, researchers at UC Berkeley clocked one hitting 385 body lengths per second, the fastest length-adjusted speed ever recorded in any vertebrate.

At that speed, the only way to actually see the color is to freeze the moment. This is that moment.

𝗔 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲. 🐦

Same bird, same species — one shot glows blue, the other glows green. That's not two different hummingbirds; it's structural color, thousands of microscopic feather layers bending light differently depending on the angle. Turn him a few degrees and the whole color shifts.

Either version, you can photograph him right here at Quinta GALEÓN.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻?

❤️ for blue, 👍 for green, 🤗 if you love both — we'll take your reaction into account.

𝗨𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝘇𝘂𝗹 𝗲𝗹𝗲́𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗼. 🐦

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁. 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻. 🐦
One of the smallest hummingbirds in the world, and the largest across North America, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands. Quinta GALEÓN is home to both of them. Very few places on Earth can say that.

If you're mapping out Costa Rica's highlands, this is a must-stop along the way.

Team tiny or team giant — which one would you want hovering in front of you first?

𝗘𝗹 𝗺𝗮́𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻̃𝗼 𝘆 𝗲𝗹 𝗺𝗮́𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲. 𝗘𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗼 𝗷𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶́𝗻. 🐦

"I just enjoyed watching the birds. I enjoyed looking at the flowers and the pretty colors. It's very relaxing — you can leave your problems at home and come here as a clean slate, no worries or trouble. You just sit here, watch the birds, look at the flowers. That's what I like about it. That's one of the biggest things right here."
