Struggling to make it out the back?

The turtle dive gets you past breaking waves on a larger board. Technique and timing matter more than strength. If you’re losing the board on the dive, that’s where to look first.

Hands at your waist. Lift your chest, swing your feet alongside the board, and drive your body vertically into the water.

As the wave arrives, roll the board over and push it into the oncoming face in a stabbing motion. The harder you push, the less likely the wave is to pull the board from your hands.

In the T-position underwater, your vertical body acts as an anchor and stops the wave from washing you back toward the beach. This is the most common error: surfers focus on rolling the board flat rather than driving their feet deep and keeping the body vertical.

Scissor kick and let the board’s buoyancy carry you back to the surface. Sink the rail slightly as you come up to pull your chest back into paddle position.

Save this before your next paddle out.

If your backside riding feels flat and slow, the issue is almost always rail engagement.

Pumping backside isn't about moving your arms more. It's about weighting the heel rail at the right moment, letting the board climb the face, and releasing that pressure before the top so the nose can drop back down.

Compress, engage, extend, release, repeat.

The rhythm can't be forced. Let the wave dictate the pace.

Struggling to commit on steeper takeoffs?

Most missed waves start with hesitation. When you second guess, your forward momentum drops and you increase the risk of going over the falls or wiping out on entry.

Commit early. Paddle with intent. Match the wave’s speed before it breaks. Even when you wipe out, you’re building confidence and learning where your limits really are.

Save this for later.
