Look at this beauty! This is a Snowy Egret, known in Spanish as the Garceta nivosa or Garcita blanca.
Her habitat is commonly found along both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica, as well as inland wetlands, mangroves, riverbanks, and lagoons.
Unlike larger, slow-moving herons, snowy egrets are very active hunters. They frequently stir up the water or sand with their bright yellow feet to startle small fish, crustaceans, and insects into motion before quickly spearing them.
During the breeding season, adults develop delicate, wispy plumes (aigrettes) on their back, neck, and head, which were historically prized for decorating women's hats!
