Costa Rica was just named a forest bathing paradise.

And honestly?

We aren't surprised.

National Geographic recently highlighted Costa Rica as one of the world's places to experience forest bathing—a practice centered around slowing down, unplugging and immersing yourself in nature.

But here's the part we love:

Forest bathing doesn't require an itinerary.

You don't have to hike a certain trail.

You don't need a guide.

You don't need to accomplish anything.

Sometimes it looks like drinking coffee beside the Río Damitas while blue morphos float along the water.

Sometimes it's listening to rain hit a tin roof.

What do you actually need to pack for Costa Rica?

Probably less than you think.

After living here, we've learned that a Costa Rica vacation doesn't require a giant suitcase.

For a week at Butterfly Bungalow, our own packing list would be surprisingly simple:

👙 3 swimsuits
👖 3 pairs of lightweight pants
🩳 3 pairs of shorts
👕 6 tops
🩴 Flip-flops
👟 Sturdy sneakers
📖 A good book
📷 A camera
❤️ And a good attitude

That's pretty much it.

Costa Rica is hot, humid, casual and wonderfully outdoorsy. You're going to swim. You'll probably get wet. You'll spend time outside. You may discover that your favorite outfit is actually a swimsuit and a cover-up.

During green season, add a lightweight rain jacket or poncho.

For evenings, loose lightweight pants are your friend.

And unless you're actually working remotely...

Leave the laptop home.

Pack for the rainforest.

Pack for the river.

Pack for the beach.

Pack for the unexpected.

But most importantly, pack a little extra time.

Because some of the best Costa Rica experiences aren't planned at all.
