No two suites at El Lugar are decorated the same way.

Restored antiques collected from around the world. Wooden details cut and finished by our own artisans, on site.

Terracotta floors, exposed beams, wrought iron, linen. Doors that open straight onto green, and in some suites, a private plunge pool with nothing in front of it but trees.

The look comes from the land itself. El Lugar sits on a family farm that has been worked for more than eighty years, and the suites were built to feel like they had always been part of it rather than dropped on top of it.

Taking it slow comes naturally around here.

Meet one of El Lugar's quietest residents, the two-toed sloth. Mostly nocturnal, they spend much of the day high in the canopy, which is exactly why catching one awake and on the move is such a good moment.

Morning walks, afternoon strolls, and guided nature trails lead through rainforest that is genuinely alive: movement overhead, old trees, and encounters no one can schedule.

Walk slowly. Nature might surprise you.

Where the lagoon meets the rainforest.

Water on one side, forest on the other. These are the spaces that open to the lagoon, where hand crafted wood details and antique pieces restored from around the world give every room its own character. Outside, nothing but green, birdsong, and the still surface of the water.

At El Lugar, the setting is already there: open outdoor spaces within a 1,200-acre private reserve, with privacy and rainforest on every side. Our team takes care of the details.

The floral arrangements are made on site by our gardening team, led by Alejandro and his father, using tropical blooms grown around the property.

Can you believe that, over 80 years ago, El Lugar was a family-run farm?

When founder Gary Douglas first experienced its beauty, he saw something extraordinary… something worth protecting.

His vision became more than creating a hotel. It was to regenerate the land, preserve its remarkable biodiversity, and share the magic of Sarapiquí with future generations of both Costa Ricans and visitors from around the world.

Today that vision lives on across a 1,200-acre private reserve, part of the greater biological corridor connected to Braulio Carrillo National Park.
