Day 2 of Cactus Flower explosion. The word has spread. The buzzing could be heard as soon as I opened the back door. Hope you all get to see and hear this one day.

If I had guests staying in the Green Room, they would have woken to the sound of buzzing bees this morning and stepped out onto the verandah to see the entire giant cactus in flower. This, like many of the ornamental plants in the garden arrived as a cutting. It seems such a shame to not have anyone to share it with, except the dogs, the chickens and the hummingbirds which can be heard in the background.

The last mango of 2026. There is plenty of frozen mango in the freezer, now safely stored thanks to solar power. No clouds over Cuba today so the system is fully charged. I am guessing that is the same for the National solar grid because we received 6 hours of power today from 6-9am and then 2-5pm. Yesterday we got an extra 1/2 hour. The blackouts are getting a little shorter, 20 hours instead of 24 or 30. I think most of us have stopped counting now. There are no cheers of joy anymore when the power does come back on. People just jump into action and try to get all the chores down before it shuts off. Fortunately enjoying a mango doesn’t require any electricity, unless you want a mango daiquiri.

Trying to write a blog, but getting distracted. It feels a little like the pandemic all over again. I have now fully embraced the solar revolution happening here, being one of the lucky ones who can afford to purchase battery, inverter and fixed solar panels to add to the energy I currently receive from 2 portable Jackery’s, a Biolite SolarHome plus numerous rechargeable fans, light globes and lanterns. The solar system is only 110 volt so doesn’t fire up the air conditioners. Actually I don’t have an air conditioner in the house. They were only installed in the guest rooms. My bedroom windows face the mountains outside Trinidad from which cool air flows down in the evening. The Caribbean Sea generates a breeze from the opposite direction during the day and the mango and avocado trees provide plenty of shade.

What a difference a decade makes. Trinidad alone had 2000 rooms listed on Airbnb a few years later. So what happened to ‘cutting loose the shackles of the past’, which, if my memory serves me correctly even the majority of Cubans in Miami were prepared to accept? How did we get to the current humanitarian crisis; massive unemployment, increased infant mortality, 30 hour blackouts, collapse of the tourist industry, foreign investors abandoning the island, silence from the world community, minimal foreign press coverage of the hardship Cubans are currently facing and the threats of invasion, regime change and takeover. Life here is so much harder that it was when I first visited in 2002 and it seems no one really cares. Plenty blame the Cuban style of government despite some new economic reforms, overlook the effect on the Cuban economy of the Covid 19 pandemic, and ignore the US sanctions and the international fuel blockade or at least pretend they don’t really exist or have any effect, which of course is utter rubbish.

Nothing like a downpour to put some glee into Cuban life. An opportunity to wash your hair in the rain as it cascades off the roof, collect water in buckets for later, clean the courtyards and the footwear. The chickens are in ecstasy at the worms and other crawlies they will now have access to because the earth has softened. Bananas are pretty chuffed too. The weight of the water brought a huge limb down from one of the avocado trees, making it easier to harvest them. Sometimes we have good days even without power. The fear of how much harder it will get never actually leaves.
