Alexandra has been coming to Modus Vivendi with her family for years, so when the idea of asking her to put together a reading list for our houses came up, it felt rather natural.

We asked her during her last visit in August, with no particular plan beyond seeing what she might come up with. She said yes immediately.
The result is Women We Read: six books by six women writers, each paired with one of our houses.

We asked Alexandra to tell us why she chose each book, and why she thought it belonged where it did. Here’s what she came up with.

Now all that’s left is to pick a house, pick a book, and come stay with us. We’ll leave the reading to you 📚

For the Lefko House, Alex recommends The White Album by Joan Didion.

“Modus Vivendi oozes Didion. One could imagine her sitting outside Lefko House, writing a novel with a brandy and a cigarette in hand. The White Album fits Lefko House not only in name, but also in spirit and narrative. Published as a collection of essays, The White Album focuses on the upheavals of American life in the 1960s. Didion’s wit, sharp observations, and stream of cultural references will definitely keep you hooked during your next stay at Modus Vivendi.”

For the Ochre House, Alex recommends Transit by Rachel Cusk

“Being at Modus makes you feel as though you’re resting from a long voyage. As the central house of the complex, the Ochre House gives you a sense of being completely detached from your everyday life. Transit follows a woman temporarily living in London, moving through a strange period of transition as she observes the lives of those around her while reconsidering her own, as though she’s arrived somewhere in between destinations. I think many people on vacation take it as an opportunity to look on their lives in a somewhat auditorial way and I think this book captures such a beautiful way to do so.“

For the Terra Verde Studio, Alex recommends Exteriors by Annie Ernaux

Living the Modus Vivendi life 🌻

For the past 20 years, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming all sorts of people through the doors of Modus Vivendi. Couples, families, solo travellers, old friends and new ones.

And after all these years, we’ve started wondering: who else would we love to see here?

So we put together our dream guest list. Six houses, eight very different personalities, and a little bit of imagination.
Here’s who we think would feel at home at Modus Vivendi.

For Dua Lipa, we chose Terra Verde Studio 💚

Small, quiet and surrounded by earthy greens, it feels like the kind of place where you could disappear for a few days with a stack of books and a notebook.
We know Dua is a keen reader and writer, with a well-known love of books that she shares through her book club and SERVICE95 . So we imagine her settling into the old desk by the window, overlooking the pool, with a book in one hand and a notebook in the other.
There’s also a little balcony, perfect for a slow breakfast in private before retreating by the pool.

Terra Verde isn’t the biggest of our houses. But perhaps that’s exactly the point. A little space to switch off, read, write and do very little at all.

The Ochre House felt made for Rama Duwaji and Zohran Mamdani.

With its earthy yellows and browns, hand-painted kitchen k***s, iron bed and that rather spectacular marble sink, it has a character all of its own — eclectic, warm and a little unexpected.
Rama, as an artist and illustrator with a wonderfully eclectic eye, would fit right in. We can imagine her noticing all the little details, sketchbook in hand, before heading out to the garden to sit next to the sunflowers and draw.

And then there’s Zohran. We imagine he’d appreciate a restful week at the Ochre House, considering how hard he works for the people he represents. A little time by the pool, surrounded by the quiet of Psematismenos, seems like a well-deserved break.

So we like to picture Rama finding inspiration in the house’s eclectic details, while Zohran enjoys a little time to slow down, recharge and take in the quiet surroundings.

Lefko means white in Greek. So naturally, we thought of Simon Porte Jacquemus.
