Pikaia Lodge in the highlands of Santa Cruz combines ecological and social responsibility with excellent hospitality, demonstrating that ecology and luxury can go hand in hand on the Galapagos. Hidden in a secluded giant tortoise reserve and nestled on the edge of an extinct volcano crater 450m above sea level, Pikaia Lodge provides the highest level of comfort and services as well as a fantastic

alternative for exploring one of the Last paradises on earth in a sustainable, yet luxurious land based way. Pikaia is designed for the environmentally conscious, adventure traveler, who seek close contact with the incredible wildlife, stunning views and the overall beauty that surrounds this UNESCO World Heritage site. All-inclusive packages of 3-7 nights are available with flexible entry. The highest quality accommodation is complemented by half and full day land and marine explorations aboard an exclusive private yacht. Every aspect of Pikaia Lodge’s construction minimizes environmental impact. The previously degraded site was regenerated with 12,000 endemic trees and grazing habitats for giant tortoises. Environmentally damaging construction materials were avoided and all waste material donated to the local government for public works. The lodge is built from recyclable materials and workers are trained with a strict environmental code. The lodge also has a long-term social responsibility program with nearby town El Cascajo, including education, donation of materials and sourcing agricultural products. Pikaia Lodge is named after our oldest known ancestor, pikaia gracilens, an extinct species believed to be the first creature to evolve into a vertebrate 500 million years ago.

- Alisson Celi, our Operations Manager, whose journey has taken her from Guayaquil to Loja, Toronto, and finally to Puerto Ayora, which she has called home for the past year. Although she has been part of Pikaia for just one year, it already feels like she has been part of the team for much longer. As Operations Manager, Alisson connects people and departments, coordinating the many details behind the scenes to make sure everything flows seamlessly.

Outside Pikaia, she is embracing island life through beach days, swimming, Pilates, exploring Puerto Ayora, studying for her Master’s in Business Management, and planning her wedding.

Her favorite spot at Pikaia is the jacuzzi at SUMAQ Spa, where the views, breeze, silence, and surrounding pit craters make it the perfect place to pause. Her favorite experience, however, is joining our navigations and experiencing the adventures alongside our guests. She loves sea lions, but has also become fascinated by the huacos, the local name for white crowned night herons. One regular visitor near her home even has a name: Jerry.

For Alisson, living and working in the Galápagos is a privilege that never loses its magic. She loves the cool, cloudy days in the highlands, and so far, Sombrero Chino is her favorite island. Her journey is a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that lead you somewhere you never expected to call home.

Ever wondered why giant tortoises hiss? 🐢

When startled or threatened, a giant tortoise quickly pulls its head and limbs into its shell, pushing air out of its lungs in the process. This sudden exhalation is what creates the characteristic hissing sound.

Their shell is more than just protective armor. It is a living part of their body, covered by a hard layer of keratin, providing a remarkable natural defense against potential threats.

And yes, we had to speed up the footage. Even the most patient guests at Pikaia can only wait so long. ✨

The cliffs of Plazas Island are an unforgettable landscape to explore.

Along the cliffs and shoreline, wildlife is everywhere. Swallow tailed gulls soar above the rugged cacti landscape, land iguanas bask on the rocks, and sea lions gather along the coast, joined by a remarkable variety of seabirds and marine life.

Here, the landscape is not simply something to admire. It is a living habitat, shaped by the elements and shared by the species that call Plazas Island home.

There is a rare kind of privilege in traveling to a National Park in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where wildlife still moves freely and encounters happen on nature’s terms.

Watching a colony of sea lions basking in the sun on a quiet beach, completely at home in their natural habitat, is a reminder of just how extraordinary the Galápagos Islands are.

This is travel at its most meaningful: experiencing the wild, while remembering that we are simply visitors.

We travel to see more than places.

We travel to experience the extraordinary: the unexpected encounters, the untouched landscapes, and the moments that make us pause and simply be present.

Some journeys stay with you forever.
