Christine Safwat ... Empowering Youth and Driving Community Development in Upper Egypt
Christine Safwat is a distinguished Egyptian community leader and development professional who has dedicated her career to empowering young people and creating sustainable opportunities across Upper Egypt. Through her work in university administration, employment initiatives, and volunteerism, she has become one of the leading advocates for youth development in the region.
Christine currently serves as Director of the Environmental Projects Department at Sohag University. She previously held the position of Marketing Advisor to the University, where she established a specialized marketing department that successfully secured funding from banking institutions and community organizations. These partnerships contributed to the establishment of advanced medical units that continue to serve the local community.
Believing that real change begins with empowering young people, Christine founded the volunteer initiative "Hekaya" (A Story), which has grown into one of the most impactful youth initiatives in Upper Egypt. What started with a small number of volunteers quickly expanded to include more than 200 active young volunteers, supported by more than 30 dedicated supporters who volunteer their time to serve, mentor, and train young people across the region.
Since its launch, Hekaya (A Story) has organized diverse training programs covering professional development, career guidance, and personal growth. The initiative was officially launched through a major educational event that attracted wide participation from young people. Its mission extends beyond career counseling to raising awareness about the social challenges that threaten youth stability and future opportunities.
Within just one year, the initiative achieved remarkable social and media recognition, providing meaningful training opportunities for more than 2,000 young men and women. Rather than waiting for participants to come to them, the Hekaya team actively traveled to underserved communities, delivering training and awareness programs directly to young people where they lived. The initiative also established numerous cooperation protocols with educational and social institutions to maximize its community impact.
Christine's commitment to youth employment dates back to 2008, when she began working in employment services as a community-oriented mission. She later became Director of the "employment company" Employment Center in Sohag, supported by Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris, helping thousands of young people access employment opportunities.
She also organized several large-scale employment fairs in Sohag and Luxor, while collaborating with Qena Governorate to provide free employment services for job seekers across Upper Egypt.
Beyond her executive roles, Christine serves as a member of the Advisory Council of the Zawaher Foundation in Luxor and as a member of the Employment Committee in Luxor Governorate, continuing her efforts to strengthen employment and community development initiatives.
Reflecting on her mission, Christine says :
I strive to expand volunteer opportunities across Upper Egypt because I truly believe that no matter how far we may seem from the spotlight, we can still create real change. Our region needs inspiring female role models, and I firmly believe that women are capable of leading, succeeding, and becoming outstanding examples for future generations.
She also emphasizes that today's youth have an urgent need for awareness across many social issues, considering it a shared responsibility to educate and support future generations for the benefit of Egypt and its young people.
Through leadership, volunteerism, and community service, Christine Safwat continues to prove that meaningful development begins with empowering people, creating opportunities, and believing in the potential of every young person. Her journey stands as an inspiring example of how vision, dedication, and community engagement can create lasting impact and shape a better future for generations to come.
