Meet the newest member of the Finca Gran Cerros team! 😂

Even at the age of 53, it’s rather heartwarming to discover that Dad can still come to the rescue...

Michael’s dad, Peter, has joined us at the finca this week, and is already looking very at home in his FGC polo shirt! 😂

Shaun is in the UK for our nephew Elliott’s wedding. We’d both have loved to be there together to celebrate Elliott and Gee’s special day, but with a full house of guests already booked in, it simply wasn’t possible. 💒 🤵 👰

So Dad has stepped into the breach and we’re extremely grateful for the extra pair of hands. 💚

Rocky, meanwhile, has taken responsibility for showing his Grandad the ropes. Payment for his training sessions appears to involve a considerable number of treats and an equally unreasonable amount of lick-giving. He's done so much training, he's now exhausted and full of treats - needed a rest mid-walk 😂 🐶

Normal service resumes on Wednesday when Shaun is home again, although we suspect Rocky will still be lobbying his Grandad quite hard for more treats and fuss!

Winter, but perhaps not quite as you know it.

By December, the oranges are ripening on the trees at Finca Gran Cerros.

The summer heat has gone. The landscape begins to green again. Clear days can be wonderfully bright, and when the sun is out, you'll often find yourself eating outside, reading on the terrace or wondering whether you're brave enough for the unheated pool.

This is still winter. There can be cool days, chilly evenings and the occasional spell of rain - and we wouldn't pretend otherwise.

But there are also blue skies, citrus trees heavy with fruit, quieter roads and walking trails, and that extraordinary Andalusian light.

For us, that's part of the appeal.

Not an endless summer.

Just a rather lovely way to do winter.

A little peek behind the scenes at Finca Gran Cerros... 🌿

When the guests are settled, breakfast is cleared away, the ironing is done, the baking is cooling and there's a gap before we start thinking about the evening meal, this is sometimes what lunch looks like for us.

Something quick, easy and healthy - this time, a Buddha bowl with carrot sticks, Greek yoghurt and sriracha sauce - an iced coffee (always!) and a few quiet minutes on our own terrace before the next job inevitably calls!

When you live and work in the same place, it's very easy to forget to stop and enjoy the peace and the view occasionally.

We're not always very good at that...! 😉💚

A little more space to settle in.

Apartment El Chorro is our largest accommodation at Finca Gran Cerros — with two bedrooms and more room to make yourself at home.

And in winter, that extra space comes into its own.

There’s room to unpack properly, cook for yourselves, linger over breakfast, spend an afternoon reading or simply come home after a day exploring and shut the door on the world for a while.

Outside, your private terrace gives you somewhere to make the most of those clear Andalusian winter days. Inside, everything you need to settle into a slower rhythm.

It works particularly well if you're staying a little longer — although you certainly don't need to disappear for weeks. Winter stays in Apartment El Chorro start from five nights.

Your own base in inland Andalusia. What you do from there is entirely up to you.

There are some problems that even seven years of living in Spain haven't solved...

Finding proper clotted cream is one of them. 😂

A test batch of homemade scones from the finca kitchen - because apparently living in rural Andalusia doesn't prevent the occasional craving for something thoroughly British!

The scones? Promising. 😋

The search for decent clotted cream - or even decent whipping cream that actually whips properly - remains ongoing.

Which leaves us with just one question...

Jam first or cream first? 👀

We're almost too afraid to ask. 😂

Winter stays work a little differently at Finca Gran Cerros.

From December, our accommodation becomes your own self-catering base in the Andalusian countryside - somewhere to unpack, slow down and settle into a different rhythm for a few days.

Make coffee when you wake up. Cook when you feel like it. Spend an afternoon reading in the winter sunshine. Head out to explore, then come home to somewhere warm and comfortable.

Each of our three accommodation options has its own character and outdoor space, with everything you need for an independent stay.

And on those clear Andalusian winter days, outside is rarely very far away.

Winter stays are now available from November.

Proof (if it was ever needed!) that occasionally we do actually leave the finca... 😂

A rare day off for the two of us recently, swapping the hills for the coast and spending a quiet few hours out on the Mediterranean. ☀️⛵

Running Finca Gran Cerros means that we're usually at home - there's generally a guest arriving, something cooking, a garden job calling or one of the furry family demanding attention.

But every now and then, it's rather lovely to remember that we made the leap to move to Spain to carve out more quality time together - and with the sea not too far down the road, it seemed only right to take advantage of it!

Fear not, normal service resumed shortly afterwards. 😉

Winter is a rather lovely time to explore this part of Andalusia.

The summer heat has gone, the roads are quieter and some of our favourite places take on a completely different character.

Walk the Caminito del Rey without the intensity of midsummer. Spend a morning amongst the extraordinary limestone landscape of El Torcal. Wander through Málaga, stop for lunch somewhere local, or simply take the road and see where you end up.

And then come back to the finca.

One of the things we love about winter here is the choice it gives you. Some days are made for exploring. Others are made for doing very little at all.

August in the garden... 🌺🌿

By this point in the Andalusian summer, keeping everything green becomes something of a challenge - mostly involving us, a straining irrigation system, a hosepipe, watering can and a great deal of optimism. 😂

But there are still corners of the finca determined to put on a show.

Bougainvillea cascading over the walls, vines creating welcome pockets of shade and little glimpses of the hills peeking through the greenery.

One of the pleasures of living here is watching the garden, and landscape beyond, change through the seasons.

Although we'll admit that in August, quite a lot of that watching is done in the dark, while it's cooler, holding a hosepipe or watering can! 💦😂
