🛏️ Standard rooms — a comfortable middle ground. A bit more space, without necessarily the standout view.

💼 Economy rooms — compact (10–12 m²), honest, and right for travellers who use the room as a base and save the budget for the city itself.

A note on bathrooms: rooms on the first floor have a full private en-suite. On the second floor, each room has its own shower and sink, with two shared toilets in the hallway — rarely an issue in practice, and it makes a balcony room considerably more affordable.

Walking Out the Door and Into Barcelona's History. Casa Granel, Carrer Girona

There's something special about the street you wake up on.
When you stay at Hostal Girona, you're not just booking a room, you're sleeping inside a piece of Barcelona's history. The building dates back to 1888, designed by Enric Sagnier i Vilavecchia, one of the most prolific architects of Catalonia.
And Carrer Girona? It rewards the curious.
Unlike the famous avenues that draw the crowds, this street keeps its calm. It's central, local, and residential the kind of street where Barcelona lives rather than performs. But look up, and you'll find that its buildings have just as much to say as any landmark on Passeig de Gràcia.
Which brings us to today's highlight: Casa Granel, at number 122.
Designed by architect Jeroni Francesc Granell i Manresa, Casa Granel sits within the Eixample block bounded by the streets of Girona, Mallorca, Bailèn, and València, presenting a single, beautifully composed façade to Carrer Girona. And what a façade it is.
The building's exterior is adorned with vibrant sgraffito decoration, and ornate wrought ironwork, all signature elements of the Modernisme movement that transformed Barcelona at the turn of the 20th century.
Granell himself was not only a celebrated architect but also a skilled stained glass artisan, known for his ability to blend traditional Catalan motifs with the organic, curvaceous lines of Modernisme. His buildings weren't just homes, they were manifestos.
This is what we love about Carrer Girona. It doesn't ask for your attention. It doesn't need to. The architecture is simply there, patient and proud, waiting for you to slow down and look up.

Word of the Day: Déu n'hi do! The Catalan expression that says it all without saying much
If you've spent any time around Catalan speakers, you've almost certainly heard this one. Dropped at the dinner table, muttered under the breath, or exclaimed with hands flying. Déu n'hi do is one of those expressions that feels untranslatable until someone explains it, and then you wonder how you ever lived without it.
Etymology
The phrase comes from the old devotional formula "Déu n'hi do", meaning "May God grant it" or "God give it there". Word by word: Déu (God) + n'hi (there, of it) + do (give, in subjunctive). Originally, it was a pious wish, an expression of humility before divine abundance. Over time, as often happens in living languages, it drifted from reverence to irony, from prayer to punchline. Today it's an exclamation of astonishment, admiration, or (very frequently) barely concealed sarcasm.
Pronunciation
Say it like: dew · nee · doh or [ˈdew niˈðo] if you want to get technical. The whole thing rolls out in a second and a half.
When to use it
The beauty of Déu n'hi do is its flexibility. It works across the entire spectrum of human surprise:
— Your neighbour's renovation has been going on for eight months: "Déu n'hi do, quant triguen…" (Wow, they're taking their time…)
— Someone serves you a crema catalana that is genuinely life-changing: "Déu n'hi do, quina crema!" (My God, what a custard!)
— You check the price of a coffee in Barcelona's tourist centre: Déu n'hi do. (No further words needed.)
— You just find out that you have to book the ticket to Sagrada Familia one week in advance: "Déu n'hi do…" (Sigh.)

In short: use it when reality exceeds expectations.

Why Barcelona has no corners?
If you walk or drive through the Eixample, you’ll notice something unusual: the blocks don’t have sharp corners. This comes from Ildefons Cerdà’s 19th-century urban plan, which designed octagonal blocks with chamfered corners to improve visibility and allow steam trams to turn. The trams were never fully implemented, but the open intersections stayed.

"Un hostal súper recomendable para quedarse, la habitación confortable, muy limpia, el desayuno muy rico, café y agua sin limitación alguna. El personal muy amable. El anfitrión tan lindo nos extendió una noche de estancia en una habitación hermosa. Volvería a quedarme si tuviera oportunidad. ¡Aquí el café y el cariño son ilimitados!"

"Recomand cu încredere, totul este extraordinar, la un preț bun, într-o locație perfectă în oraș. Totul este curat. Mic dejunul foarte bun. Oamenii sunt amabili. Sper să mai ajung în Barcelona vreodată și cu siguranță tot aici m-aș caza."

"We stayed here while we ran the Barcelona Half Marathon, it was perfect location for what we needed. The room was really clean, a bit weird having a shared toilet but really no problem. Breakfast was everything you could need for a quick breakfast with a helpful lady too."

Ficamos no quarto de casal com terraço para o pátio interno e com banheiro privativo. Quarto 9. Ele era enorme e ainda tinha uma banheira! Foi um ponto muito positivo pois tivemos muito espaço para locomoção e acomodar as malas!
O quarto estava muito bem cuidado, decorado e aparentava ser novo! Eram duas camas de solteiro juntas que f**aram grande nos dando maior conforto!
Chuveiro com pressão forte e limpeza diária no quarto. A Recepcionista foi muito gentil e simpática! Acesso livre 24 horas com código. Na parte compartilhada tinha café, água e achocolatado. O Edifício é histórico e a localização é excelente pois conseguimos ir andando para os principais pontos turísticos da cidade!
O Hostal f**a próximo a cafeteria, farmácia, restaurante, mercado, sorveteria.
Um ponto relevante sobre nossa estadia é que a caixa d'água do banheiro f**ava dentro do quarto e fazia barulho todas as vezes que a descarga era usada. Também dava pra ouvir barulho dos quartos ao lado. Apenas um dia o elevador estava sem funcionar."
