The Gegants are huge traditional figures that are part of Catalan culture. They are usually made of a light structure covered with fabric, and a person stands inside to carry and move them.

Each Giant represents a different character, such as a king, queen or other traditional figure. They wear colorful clothes and can be several meters tall.

You can see the Gegants during festivals and special celebrations in Barcelona. They walk through the streets, dance to traditional music and take part in parades.

The Gegants are an important symbol of Catalan traditions and bring history, music and celebration together.

During La Mercè, from September 23-27, one of Barcelona’s biggest festivals, the Gegants become part of the celebration. They can be seen walking through the city, especially in the old town and around Plaça Sant Jaume.

Tomorrow, Thursday, September 24th at 11:30 AM, join us for a special La Mercè celebration in Barcelona!

What is La Mercè?
La Mercè is Barcelona’s biggest annual festival, celebrating the city’s patron saint with traditional Catalan culture, music, performances, parades, and plenty of street celebrations.

And tomorrow, we’re going to experience one of Catalonia’s most iconic traditions: the Castellers!

These incredible human towers are a unique Catalan tradition where groups of people work together to build spectacular towers — a true symbol of teamwork, trust and community.

📍 Meeting point: We leave at 11:30 AM from each of our hostels in Barcelona
