The town of La Orotava, located on the island of Tenerife, is the only municipality in the Canary Islands that is part of the prestigious international Cittaslow network. This movement brings together towns with fewer than 50,000 inhabitants that are committed to sustainability, preserving local identity, ecotourism, and a slower pace of life that contrasts with the hustle and bustle of modern urban life.
La Orotava stands out within the Cittaslow network thanks to a management model and geography that prioritize community well-being and responsible tourism:
Protected Historical Heritage: Its excellently preserved old town invites leisurely strolls among traditional Canarian architecture and mansions dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Connection with Nature: Its territory extends from a cliff-lined coast to the summit of Mount Teide, offering an exceptional network of hiking trails.
Sustainability and Local Consumption: Promotion of local crafts, local businesses, and locally sourced cuisine in traditional markets. Events with a Slow Philosophy: The 2nd La Orotava International Cittaslow Festival was recently held in the Plaza de la Constitución, an event dedicated to workshops on local traditions (such as gofio making), live music, and a twinning with another municipality in the network (such as Bubión, in Granada).
