La Cazalla de Ronda

For the past couple of nights we have had some very special guests at La Cazalla. A flock of European Bee-eaters have chosen to roost in the trees around the house 😍 They’re generally easier to hear than they are to spot 😂 but they are so beautiful when you can catch sight of their vibrant colours. They are preparing to migrate to Africa any day now, so we are so glad we had their company for these final days of summer 😊

On Wednesday, 26th November 2025 we started our olive harvest. We knew it would be a good year as every single tree was laden with plump olives, and we welcomed anyone who offered to come and help us get them off the trees and in to the nets. It was a lot of hard work, but such a joyous experience, surrounded by our friends, (and our animals!) we chatted and laughed and, by the end of the week, we were deliriously tired! We gathered 1,497kg, took them to the mill in 3 cars, with 2 trailers and returned with 254 litres of cold-pressed, organic, extra virgin olive oil to share with our friends, family and of course, La Cazalla’s lucky guests!

An interesting article in The Sunday Times today about olive oil - ‘The liquid gold that took over the world’.

We just managed to harvest La Cazalla’s olives between the recent torrential rains, and took them to our local mill 5km away in Ronda. The harvest was 30% down on last year, but thankfully still enough for us, our family and friends and of course, La Cazalla’s lucky guests!

Under the late September Tuscan sun, the leaves of 25,000 olive trees rustle gently in the breeze. Among them are clusters of gently ripening fruits, mostly green, some beginning to turn black. They are all shapes and sizes: some small and pointed, others fat and luscious. In the distance hazy blue....

LA Organic has finally opened its Philippe Starck designed museum dedicated to the liquid gold that is olive oil. Spain is the world’s largest producer of olive oil and 75% of that oil comes from Andalucia. At LA Organic they offer tastings of their oil along the same lines as a wine tasting experience, interesting! The new museum has long been a controversial project for Ronda and something of a ‘love it or hate it’ building…we’ll be popping in shortly to see for ourselves! Watch this space!
