An Eco-Friendly Lodge Nestled In The Mountains Of Tigray

Designed by Giuseppe Tommasi, an Italian architect from the school of Carlo Scarpa, the structures are oriented to simplicity and solutions are minimalist. Bungalows have been developed with local workers and techniques, adopting the traditional 'tigrigna' architecture based on sand-stone walls and 'wood and soil' roofs; furniture and cloths are Ethiopian or, any case, manifactured in the village.

Only the major technical equipments (sanitary fittings, water pumps, community kitchen, industrial washing machines, generator, etc) have been imported from Italy for quality reasons. Drilling of two boreholes were executed in late 2005, construction realised by 'Elmi Olindo plc' during 2006 and start-up procedures in the first months of 2007. The lodge has been inaugurated by the President of National Regional State of Tigrai on March 25th 2007.

They've been here for over 1,600 years — hidden in cliffs, carved by hand, kept alive by faith.
The rock-hewn churches of Tigray are unlike anything else on earth. No grand entrances or tourist crowds. Just ancient frescoes, stone-cut ceilings, and priests who have guarded these places for generations. Some you hike to. Some you climb to. All of them will stop you in your tracks.
