Only 30 minutes from Asnières. The chateau and city of Angers is definitely somewhere we recommend our guests to visit. 👌🏼
Most people visit the Loire Valley for castles like Chambord and Chenonceau, but Angers quietly holds one of France’s biggest surprises. Hidden inside its medieval fortress is the Apocalypse Tapestry, a 14th century masterpiece stretching more than 100 meters long. It is the largest surviving medieval tapestry series in the world, and most tourists still have no idea it’s there.
Angers feels calmer than many of the Loire Valley towns people usually rush to first. The old streets are full of half timbered houses, small cafés, and students from the local university, so the city never feels frozen in time. You get history, but you also get real everyday French life happening around it.
The Château d’Angers dates back to the 13th century and was once a powerful fortress guarding the region of Anjou. From the ramparts, you can look out across the Maine River and see just how strategic this city once was. Spring and early fall are probably the best times to visit because the gardens around the castle are quieter and the light in the late afternoon is beautiful for photos.
A lot of people pass through Angers on the train between Paris and Nantes without stopping. Honestly, it deserves at least one full day, especially if you enjoy places that still feel local instead of overly polished for tourists. Have you ever visited Angers, or is it still one of those French cities sitting on your future travel list?
