Some of the best things about staying at Jouralem start before breakfast… 🥖🥐

For nine years, Au P’tit Pétrin in Saint-Saturnin has been our boulangerie — and a firm favourite with our guests. Our mornings start with a trip to the boulangerie for their wonderful croissants and beautiful loaves. And if we were too late, there’s always the village’s baguette vending machine stocked with their lovely tradition baguettes!

Behind all those breakfasts were Jean-Marc and Karine who ran the boulangerie for 28 years.

We were lucky enough to get a little glimpse behind the scenes with the lovely Matt - Personal & Brand Photographer : the dough being worked, baguettes being shaped and scored, and the shelves filling up with bread.
Last month, Karine and Jean-Marc retired and passed the boulangerie on to a new baker.
So before that chapter closes, I wanted to share a few photographs — and say a very heartfelt merci.
Thank you, Karine and Jean-Marc, for nine years of early-morning croissants, baguettes and wonderful bread, and for being such a lovely part of the Jouralem story.
Nous vous souhaitons une très belle retraite à tous les deux ! 🤍

September at Jouralem… 🍂

The summer holidays are drawing to a close, the days are beginning to soften, and there’s the first hint of autumn in the air.

Under the old horse chestnut, the cyclamen are beginning to appear, while the garden is still holding onto the colours and warmth of late summer.

And, for now, the pool is still very much open.

That lovely moment between summer and autumn — quieter days, warm afternoons and just a little change in the air.

September suits Jouralem. 🤍

When lightning strikes a 16th-century chapel… ⚡️

Last Monday , during one of those extraordinary summer storms, lightning struck our little chapel.

The thunder was quite something. And when the storm had passed, we discovered the aftermath: pieces of tuffeau from our beautiful chapel bell tower scattered across the garden, damage to the roof and a rather long list of things inside the Manoir that had also felt the effects.

The whole property was left without power, and several appliances, lights and pieces of equipment were damaged.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt — and our lovely guests have been incredibly understanding while we’ve dealt with the unexpected consequences.

It’s been quite a summer for weather here in France. The heat, the dryness, storms between heatwaves and even hail, all causing chaos. It certainly reminds us that however old and solid a Manoir may feel, we’re still very much at the mercy of the elements.

But life at Jouralem continues… long lunches, warm afternoons, the garden, the pool — and, for the moment, the occasional electrician. 😉

This summer we’re doing things a little differently, welcoming families or groups of friends to enjoy the whole Manoir exclusively, on a self-catering basis, before returning to our usual chambres d’hôtes in the autumn.

A little battered, perhaps, but still very much ourselves. 🤍

Have you experienced any memorable summer storms this season?
