Breakfast delivery this morning 🥐🥖
We have a lovely couple staying with us this week with their two dogs, and this morning they ordered our French Breakfast Basket.
Fresh baguettes, croissants, pains au chocolat, yoghurt and jam, ready for a very French start to the day. 🇫🇷
One of the optional extras guests can order during their stay at Ursula Gîte.
Although delivering warm croissants first thing in the morning does require a certain amount of restraint on the walk from our kitchen to theirs... 😂

Remember the inflatable llama we spotted in Bricomarché?

We managed to procure one. 😂🦙

So, everyone... meet Frida, the newest llama at Holidays-Normandy.

Frida is named after one of our recent guests, who earned the title of Number One Carrot Feeder during her stay. 🥕🏆

This was excellent news for Janet, whose usual evening ration of one or two carrots suddenly increased to upwards of FIFTEEN.

Frida has now gone home. ☹️

Janet is perplexed.

Standards were established. Expectations were raised. Management has subsequently failed to maintain them.

Inflatable Frida, meanwhile, has taken up residence in the pool, where she has a lovely view across the Normandy countryside and can keep an eye on her llama cousins. 🦙

We're fairly confident she'll be considerably cheaper to feed.

Janet remains unconvinced that this is progress. 😂

Friday morning errands, Normandy style. 🥐

An ophthalmologist appointment this morning,
followed by a rather more enjoyable appointment with the counter at La Gourmandise. 😋

There’s usually a queue on a Friday morning, but today’s wasn’t too bad... and frankly, we think it’s worth waiting for anyway.

Bread, croissants, cakes, pastries and far too many decisions to make when you’re standing in front of this lot.

One of our little local favourites. 💚

💚 Sometimes the loveliest messages come from people who aren't even our guests.

This week I received an email from Karo in Germany, who found the Holidays-Normandy blog while planning her first trip to Normandy.

She and her partner aren't staying at Ursula Gîte. In fact, our 17th-century barn has been comprehensively beaten by a rooftop tent. 😂 They're setting off on their Normandy adventure and camping along the way.
But Karo took the time to write simply to say thank you.

She told me she'd found lots of useful information and tips in the blog, that it had helped reassure them about travelling here despite their worries about the language, and that reading it made her want to set off immediately.

And then she said:
💚 “Your blog is so detailed, helpful and lovingly written... You should write a travel guide.”

Considering how many evenings I've spent researching events, checking opening times, writing, translating, updating and generally disappearing down Normandy-shaped rabbit holes, that meant rather a lot.

I never wanted the blog to be just another collection of “10 things to do in Normandy” articles.

I wanted it to be genuinely useful. The sort of thing I'd have liked to find when we first started exploring this corner of France ourselves, with the places we love, the things we've discovered, the practical bits people actually need to know and the occasional bit of nonsense thrown in for good measure.

So receiving an email like this from someone I've never met, who isn't booking anything and simply wanted to say thank you, was rather special.

Thank you, Karo. 💚

Have a fantastic first trip to Normandy. And if that rooftop tent happens to bring you through Coutances, you know where we are. 🇫🇷

Pichou, meanwhile, appears extremely enthusiastic about the travel-guide idea. 🦙😂

🔧 Obviously, I couldn't leave Lee out... 😂

After asking my robot George to create a picture of me based on everything he knows about life at Holidays-Normandy, there was only one thing to do...

I introduced George to Lee.

Apparently, this is what George thinks our unpaid COO, Chief Animal Handler and resident solution-finder looks like in his natural habitat. 🔧🦙

Chief Animal Handler ✔️
Building fixer ✔️
Hot tub technician ✔️
Garden & grounds keeper ✔️
Emergency plumber ✔️
Llamas' BFF ✔️
Gin supply manager ✔️
Says "yes dear" rather less often than he should ❌

I particularly appreciate that RELAX remains resolutely unticked. 😂

Between the gîte, the animals, the gardens, guest changeovers and whatever I've decided would be a "good idea" this week, there's usually something requiring Lee and his toolbox.

And somehow, he keeps coming back for more. 💚

Although I suspect the Normandy c***r and Janet have something to do with it. 🦙🍺

👀 Something new is coming to Nicorps...

The Auberge de Brothelande is under new ownership, and this rather exciting sign has appeared outside:
OUVERTURE PROCHAINEMENT 🎉

We haven't met the new owners yet, so we don't know any more than that for now, but we're really pleased to see our village auberge preparing to reopen.

It's something we've definitely missed having in Nicorps this summer, and having somewhere to eat right here in the village will be lovely for locals and potentially very handy for our guests too.

We'll be keeping an eye on that little blackboard... 👀

🍂 Autumn is arriving in Normandy… and it’s one of our favourite times of year.

After a very hot, very dry summer, we’ve finally had some proper rain. The fields are turning green again, the temperatures are dropping, and Normandy is beginning to look rather more like Normandy. 💚

Summer may be winding down, but there’s still plenty happening.

🏰 European Heritage Days open the doors to fascinating historic buildings and places
🌸 Autumn brings colourful dahlia festivals
🎡 The traditional fairs return, including the Sainte-Croix Fair at Lessay and the Gavray Fair
🎃 Toussaint is another lovely time for an autumn break
🏰 And it’s a brilliant time to visit Mont-Saint-Michel, as the main summer crowds begin to disappear

Back at the gîte, some of the seasonal outdoor activities are gradually being packed away, but the private 6-person hot tub isn’t going anywhere. 🫧

You’ll still have:

🌿 Your own private enclosed garden
🌳 Mon Jardin Secret, our private 4,000 m² space exclusively for gîte guests
🫧 Private 6-person hot tub
🐶 2 dogs welcome, more on request
🦙 Our resident llamas next door
🏖️ The Normandy coast and sandy beaches just 15 minutes away
🏡 A spacious countryside gîte sleeping 8–10

💚 Book direct for our best rates: €100–€200/night for up to 6 guests, depending on season. Additional guests €25pp/night, up to 10 guests.

Autumn in Normandy means quieter beaches, easier sightseeing, traditional fairs, heritage, changing landscapes and coming home to a hot tub after a day exploring.

Frankly, summer gets rather too much of the publicity. 🍂

📅 Autumn availability from September onwards
📆 2027 bookings also open

🌧️ Normandy is turning green again.

After weeks of bright blue skies, temperatures well into the 30s and some rather crispy-looking countryside, we've finally had a few days of rain.
And what a difference it's making.

The ground around us is still carrying the scars of the canicule, but look beyond it and the green is already creeping back across the fields, hedgerows and trees.
The blue skies and 35°C+ days seem to have passed for now, and I don't think we're the only ones breathing a little sigh of relief.

This evening's view from La Ruche. 🌿

Apparently, this is me. 😂

I asked George my robot to create a picture of me based on everything it has learned from our many, MANY conversations about running Holidays-Normandy.

And... I can't really argue with the result.

And Janet, naturally, deciding that whatever I'm doing would be greatly improved by putting her face directly in front of it. 🦙

Running a little family gîte in Normandy apparently requires rather more hats than we anticipated... but I wouldn't have it any other way. 💚

Gîte sorted. ✔️
An evening to ourselves. ✔️

The Normandy weather is being suitably dramatic tonight, so we're hiding indoors at Good Burger in Coutances. 🍔🍟

No cooking. No washing up. And absolutely no complaints from us.

Exceptional as always... although Lee may need an engineering qualification to work out how to eat that burger. 😂

Sometimes the simple evenings are the best ones. 💚
