Kom en geniet van het goede leven in la douce France in onze gîtes of chambres d'hôtes. Onze vakantiewoningen (gîtes) liggen bij het dorpje Pensol, departement Haute-Vienne in de streek Périgord Vert op de noordgrens van de Dordogne, middenin het Parc Naturel Régional Périgord/Limousin. Le Moulin de Pensol ligt aan de internationale wandelroute Saint Jacques/Santiago de Compostella en aan de grand

e randonnée nr.4. De gîtes zijn zeer rustig gelegen op het terrein van onze oude watermolen, waarvan de geschiedenis teruggaat naar de 17de eeuw. De gîtes liggen direct aan de rand van het bos met aan de voorzijde een eigen terras, grasveld (loungeveld) en het riviertje Le Bandiat. Vanuit uw gîte wandelt u direct de natuur in en met 20 minuten lopen door de bossen achter de gîtes staat u aan het meer L'Epinassie. Ons meer dan 80.000 m2 grote terrein staat volledig tot uw beschikking en bestaat uit glooiende weilanden, een grote fruitboomgaard, moes- en kruidentuin, bossen, grotten, middeleeuwse wasplaats, veel rustige hoekjes, heldere beekjes, eeuwenoude kastanje- en lindebomen. Een eigen zwembad ontbreekt uiteraard niet!

🦋 The peacock has been crowned Britain's favourite butterfly!

Butterfly Conservation's first-ever public vote saw the peacock beat 59 other species to take the top spot, with the orange-tip, red admiral, holly blue and brimstone rounding out the top five.

It's a species we don't photograph often — we tend to point the camera at the rarities, so we had to dig through the archive for this one. But it's a good reminder of how genuinely stunning this butterfly is, and how lucky we are that it's still relatively common in our gardens and hedgerows.

It's one of 69 species recorded here at Le Moulin de Pensol, and this is turning into an incredible butterfly season.

If you liked it then you should have put a bow on it.

This bit of ribbon is to remind me not to trim the bit of hawthorn that we watched a black-veined white butterfly lay her eggs on yesterday. Its right outside our front door so prime target for a bit of mindless tidying!

Yesterday's nature walk was something special. 🌿

Twenty-two people joined us for our first guided walk as part of the LPO Fête de la Nature — exploring the grounds, hearing about the rewilding and restoration work we've been doing here, and meeting the management team: four horses, four donkeys, and a mule.

We visited the new pond, tried some pond dipping, and caught a fire salamander eft and tadpoles. All followed by a slap up lunch at Le Ferme du Lac. My perfect Sunday.

We also raised 200€ for Héliominos, the rescue centre where three of our donkeys came from.

Thank you to everyone who came — and to the LPO for bringing people our way. We'll be doing a French-language walk next, so watch this space. 🐸

Coming down off the granite 🪨

Le Moulin sits on granite — acidic soils, a particular set of species. But venture down into the neighbouring Charente and you hit the chalk, and a whole other world opens up.

Yesterday's highlights: chalk burnet moth, Nottingham catchfly, heath fritillary, and bloody nosed beetle.

That's the thing about being here — the geology shifts within a short drive, and so does everything living on it.

L'aéroport de Limoges. Une fois de plus, ce parterre rempli d'orchidées a été tondu au pire moment de l'année. Cette obsession inutile pour la propreté. 😡
N'hésite pas à le tailler plus t**d dans l'été. Mais pas avant que les orchidées aient fleuri.

Limoges airport. Once again this bank full of orchids has been mown at exactly the wrong time of year. The pointless pursuit of tidyness. 😡
Cut it later in the summer by all means. But not until the orchids have flowered.

🌿 Happy International Day for Biological Diversity!

Today we celebrate the extraordinary life that shares this land with us at Le Moulin de Pensol — damselflies patrolling the river margins, wild orchids in the meadows, beetles on ox-eye daisies, and tadpoles in the shallows.

This is why we do what we do. Every rewilding decision, every acre left to nature, every chemical kept out of this valley — it shows up here, in moments like these.

An ode to nature". 🌿
The French have a lovely way with words. Might have to steal that one for the marketing.
This family booked Le Moulin gite for a family reunion. It works brilliantly for that as each of the three rooms has their own bathroom, so no arguments about who's taking too long in the shower!

1st proper ride on new boy. A ride we call "Tweseldown" because it reminds me of the heaths of Surrey and Hampshire where I grew up. Its actually part of the well-known Sentier du Bandiat which you can access directly from Le Moulin de Pensol.
Boys did well, having negotiated the River of Death, an alarming fisherman, several logs of doom and a suspicious clump of scabious which Balkan thought was trying to kill him.
We all survived anyway.

🌿 Wildlife Walk & Sunday Lunch

for a relaxed morning exploring nature, as part of the LPO Festival of Nature.

Meet at 10:30am for a free guided wildlife tour around our grounds — discover our rewilding and conservation work, new ponds, and the wildlife that calls this place home.

The tour will be given in English on this occasion.

Afterwards, walk with us through the woods (approx. 2km) to La Ferme du Lac for Sunday lunch.
