✨A Journey Back in Time – Housesteads Roman Fort

Just a short drive from Atte Combe Cottage lies one of Britain’s most impressive Roman sites, Housesteads Roman Fort.

Built around AD 124, Housesteads was once home to around 800 Roman soldiers who lived and worked here guarding the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. Perched high on the dramatic Whin Sill ridge, the fort offers breathtaking views across the Northumberland countryside and gives visitors a real sense of what life was like 2,000 years ago.

Today you can explore the remains of the barracks, hospital, granaries and even some of the best-preserved Roman toilets in Britain. Following the paths alongside Hadrian’s Wall, it’s easy to imagine Roman soldiers keeping watch over the wild landscape stretching before them 2,000 years ago.

A visit to Housesteads is a must for anyone staying at Atte Combe Cottage and wanting to discover the incredible history right on our doorstep.

🌿 Every time I head to the cottage for a changeover at the moment, there seems to be a new bloom waiting to be admired. Today it was the turn of this beautiful white peony rose – absolutely perfect.

The garden is putting on quite a show just now, with fresh flowers appearing almost daily and adding even more charm to a stay at Atte Combe Cottage. 🌸✨

🦋🦋🦋 Three beautiful butterflies were resting on the patio table this morning. Butterflies love warmth, so they may have been soaking up a little heat from the table or drying their wings after last night’s rain.

Butterflies are often seen as a symbol of joy, hope, and good luck, so we’ll take that as a wonderful sign for our guests arriving later today.

There’s something very special about slowing down and noticing these little moments in the garden at Atte Combe Cottage. Nature always seems to put on a good show. 🌿☀️🦋

☀️ It’s been an absolute corker of a Bank Holiday weekend here at Atte Combe Cottage! The sunshine has been glorious and the garden is looking especially pretty at the moment.

Our lovely new garden furniture has arrived just in time and it’s been wonderful for our guests relaxing outside, making the most of the warm weather, peaceful surroundings and beautiful Northumberland countryside. 🌿🥂

From morning coffees in the sunshine to lazy afternoons and evening drinks in the garden, this is exactly what a Bank Holiday getaway should feel like.
