Meet Marie’s Cottage ❤️

We’re almost ready to open the doors! A slight delay thanks to the carpet cleaners having to reschedule 🙈, but I’m now aiming for NEXT WEEKEND. Eeek!

And I need to know… what do you think so far? 👀

Marie’s Cottage is right next door to Sycamore Cottage in Arlecdon, West Cumbria — and this gives us something we haven’t been able to offer before…

☕ HAPPY MONDAY… especially to the teachers/TAs who are already wondering how on earth it can only be Monday. 😂❤️

The return to school this September has made me reflect on something that sits very close to my heart.

Because when I'm not running Holidays in Cumbria, I'm a teacher too.

And I don't think people outside education always realise just how tough this profession can be.

We talk a lot about workload.

The marking. The planning. The data. The emails at ridiculous hours. The Sunday-night feeling. The constant pressure of accountability while trying to actually do the thing we came into the profession to do...

Teach children.

But there's another side of education that we don't talk about nearly enough.

The culture that exists in some schools.

I've seen brilliant, experienced teachers have their confidence slowly chipped away.

Teachers placed on "support plans" that feel less like support and more like the beginning of being managed out. When they do get bullied out, being forced to sign NDAs.

Timetables that seem almost deliberately impossible, while someone doing the same job somehow ends up with the dream timetable.

Constant learning walks and scrutiny.

Moving goalposts.

Being made to feel that you're failing despite giving everything you've got.

The expectation that you will just absorb another responsibility because "it's for the children."

Working through lunch because there's nowhere else to fit everything.

Going home exhausted and still opening the laptop that evening.

And perhaps one of the saddest things...

Watching good teachers leave a profession they once absolutely loved.

Of course, there are wonderful schools and wonderful leaders out there. This isn't every school.

But if you've worked in education for long enough, you'll probably recognise at least some of this.

Then there's one final little sting.

We can only go on holiday when everybody else wants to go on holiday. 😂

👀 WE’VE BEEN KEEPING A LITTLE SECRET NEXT DOOR TO SYCAMORE…

And we’re nearly ready to show you what we’ve been working on. 🏡🐾

The cottage right next door to Sycamore Cottage, Cumbria is about to become part of the Holidays in Cumbria family, and we’re currently doing all those last little jobs that somehow take FOREVER. 😂

Pictures going up. Beds being dressed. Furniture being moved around. Then moved back again.

You know the drill…

And I thought I’d give you a little sneak peek at what’s coming.

🐾 Yes, it’s going to be dog friendly!

We’re also putting solid wood flooring throughout downstairs, because anyone who holidays with dogs knows just how much easier that makes life. Muddy paws are part of a Lake District holiday, after all. 😂🐾

Upstairs there will be:

🛏️ One king-size bedroom

🛏️ One zip-link bedroom, which can be set up as either two single beds OR one superking

And downstairs there’ll also be a sofa bed, giving us even more flexibility for families and groups.

The garden isn't as big as Sycamore's, so I want to be completely upfront about that. There'll be a little patio area and a small grassy section, rather than a large garden.

But here's the bit I'm REALLY excited about… 👀

It's right next door to Sycamore.

So you'll be able to book one cottage on its own OR book both cottages together.

That means up to 9 people can holiday together, but you still get two separate cottages, two kitchens and your own space.

Perfect for extended families.

Perfect for friends.

And possibly perfect for those family holidays where you love everyone dearly but absolutely DO NOT want to live with them for seven days. 😂

Location-wise, you’ve got:

🌊 Ennerdale just minutes away
🏖️ St Bees and the coast around 15 minutes away
