Autumn strimming work begins! These drains (2 of them) are how any winter flooding in the campervan field drains under the lock road and into the weir pool. Good job Anne πŸ‘πŸ»

Sometimes a photo isn’t enough - sometimes you just need to stop and stare …

What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?
No time to stand, beneath the boughs, and stare as long as sheep or cows:
No time to see, when woods we pass, where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:
No time to see, in broad daylight, streams full of stars, like skies at night:
A poor life this this if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare.

So, lots of people have asked me what this is ... Robin's Pincushion (Rose bedeguar gall)

It is caused by a tiny insect named the gall wasp (Diplolepis rosae).

A female wasp lays eggs inside a rose bud or stem.

Chemicals from the growing larvae trick the plant into building a protective hairy nest instead of normal leaves or flowers.

It starts green and soft, then turns bright red, pink, or fuzzy brown as it ages into a hard mass in the autumn.

The woolly mass contains many tiny chambers where the insect grubs live safely through the winter before emerging in spring.

It looks alarming, but it does not harm or kill the rose plant.

In old English folklore, it was named after Robin Goodfellow (Puck) because people thought magical sprites created the strange fuzzy growth.

Now you know!
