Are you like me and love to shop local? Every Friday I'Il be highlighting a local business close to The Old Post Office. Today’s featured business is Brown Onion Books, a recently opened independent bookshop on Church Street in Ashbourne, offering a carefully curated selection of both fiction and non-fiction titles. The owners have exciting plans to introduce book clubs, themed events, and local author signings, making it a wonderful addition to the town’s thriving independent business community. I couldn’t resist asking about the unusual name, and the explanation was fascinating. An onion and a book share a remarkable similarity in that they are both defined by layers. While an onion reveals its physical layers as it is peeled, a book gradually unfolds its narrative, emotional, and thematic layers as it is read, making Brown Onion Books a thoughtful and fitting name for a place dedicated to discovering new stories and ideas.

Are you like me and love to shop local? Every Friday I'll be highlighting a local business close to The Old Post Office. When you are in Ashbourne, make sure to stop by Loaf, a traditional artisan bakery located right on the Market Place. Baking from their century-old bakery, they produce a wonderful selection of handcrafted breads alongside delicious sweet and savoury takeaway treats. Everything I’ve tried from Loaf has been absolutely delicious, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular local favourite. Just one tip—arrive before 2pm, as they close early and the best items don’t stay on the shelves for long! Loaf

Are you like me and love to shop local? Every Friday I'll be highlighting a local business close to The Old Post Office. It would be easy to drive straight past Preston’s Home & Lifestyle in Ashbourne. From its location on a petrol station forecourt, you’d never guess the treasure trove waiting inside. Step through the door and you’ll find an impressive collection of furniture, home décor, gifts, and accessories, with plenty of inspiration for every room. It’s one of those places that’s much bigger than it looks and well worth taking the time to explore. Prestons Home

A Cottage Through Time - Week One
Over the next few Sundays, I’d like to take you on a journey through the story of The Old Post Office. We’ll look back at its life before it became a holiday cottage, explore what first drew me to this special property and the beautiful surrounding area, share some family memories made along the way, and follow its transformation through renovation, restoration and ongoing care. From village post office and shop to the welcoming holiday home it is today, every corner has a story to tell. Join me each Sunday as we uncover a little more of its past and present.

The Old Post Office was once exactly that – the heart of village life here in Clifton. Before becoming our home and later a holiday cottage, it served as the village post office and shop, where locals would call in for everyday essentials, buy a stamp or two, and catch up on the latest news. More than just a place to shop, it was a meeting point where neighbours stopped for a friendly chat and the community came together as part of daily life.

I’m Lindsey, the owner of The Old Post Office. When guests stay with me and have a wonderful time, I’m often the one they thank. While I might choose the décor and be responsible for the little extras, the person who really deserves the credit is Chloe. She works incredibly hard behind the scenes making sure the cottage is beautifully clean, well prepared and ready for every arrival. Her attention to detail and pride in her work help make each stay special, and I will always be so grateful to have her. ❤️ ROYAL CLEAN
