This lawn is showing clear signs of soil compaction. Notice the lighter, yellowing areas and the lack of growth compared to the darker green sections. Compacted lawns often struggle to produce strong, vigorous growth, resulting in grass that stays shorter, thinner and less healthy-looking.
In this lawn, you can see variations in colour across the surface, which indicate differences in soil conditions below, in this case compaction.
Over time, foot traffic, pets, machinery and even periods of heavy rainfall can compress the soil, reducing the air spaces that grass roots rely on. When roots can't move freely through the soil profile, they find it harder to access oxygen, water and nutrients.
🔎 One simple way to check for compaction is the knife test. Try pushing a knife or screwdriver into moist soil (preferably after rainfall). In healthy soil, it should pe*****te the ground relatively easily. If it takes a lot of force, the soil is compacted beneath the surface.
Standard aeration can help relieve compaction in the top 3-4 inches of soil, improving airflow, drainage and root development.
