Some wintry and wild conditions on the hill for last week's Mountain Leader Assessment. Managing varied and challenging weather is an important part of being a leader in the mountain environment, and requires good planning and sound decision-making - a huge well done to everyone for their efforts!

If you're planning an adventure in the hills this autumn, here are a couple wee reminders from Senior Instructor Derek 🍂

🔦 the clocks go back this weekend, so don't get caught out by the earlier sunsets - with fewer daylight hours a headtorch is essential
🧤it's getting colder, but especially up the hills - time to add warmer layers and extra gloves to your pack if you haven't already
🧭 check the forecast and make a plan suitable for the weather

The SAIS Forecaster Development Programme is for winter mountaineers interested in developing to become a SAIS Observer.

The programme uses an apprenticeship-style approach to help you develop the knowledge, skills and practical judgement needed, over a two-year period. It involves:

❄ Initial training course: a five-day course combining classroom learning and practical exercises
❄ Mentored field training: joining experienced SAIS forecasters during normal operational forecasting work
❄ Independent learning: spending time in the mountains applying what you have learned and producing draft avalanche reports

Application timelines will be announced soon, with the intent that the programme will start this coming winter. More information is available via the link in the comments 👇

❄️ BOOKINGS ARE NOW LIVE for our upcoming Winter Skills CPD weekend in January 2027! It’s never too early to start thinking about winter ❄️

This weekend is for you if:

• You are venturing out in winter for the first time
• You want to develop your personal and/or professional winter skills
• You have completed a Winter Mountain Leader training course but feel like you need a refresher before taking the plunge and booking your assessment
• You are looking for a skills refresher and need some reassurance that you’re doing things right
• Want to meet likeminded people from the outdoor community

The MTA Winter CPD Conference is open to all MTA members with an interest in getting out in winter.

Last week's Mountain Leader Training course headed around Bynack Mor on Friday and Saturday. With autumnal colours and weather throughout the course, the group also took in An Lurg, with the wreckage of a Vickers Wellington Bomber that crashed in 1944
