Wojtek made friends wherever he went.

In offices, on beaches, in camp — he simply turned up, and people loved him.

He had no rank that mattered to strangers, no language, no story they could read. And yet they always stayed.

Some were kind, and offered the soldiers work.

A new country. An uncertain welcome. But Wojtek walked in with his regiment, as he always had — steady, calm, and entirely himself.

In Scotland, the Mayor welcomed the soldiers to his town.

The regiment had travelled from the mountains of Iran to the hills of the Scottish Borders. From war to peace. From one world to another.

They had arrived. And Wojtek was with them — heading to the very land where Lazyday Cottages now stands.

Peter asked the General when they would be going home. By Harvest? Halloween? Or Christmas?

"Not home," said the General. "Scotland."

"Scotland?" shouted the men.

"The enemy's still in our towns, and on our fields and farms. We must bide our time abroad."

"And Wojtek?" asked Peter.

"Wojtek comes with us," said the General.

The men smiled.

October is nearly wrapped — and November is looking stunning.

There is something special about the Scottish Borders as autumn fades into early winter. The skies get dramatic. The countryside goes quiet. And coming back to a warm log cabin with a hot tub after a long walk feels like pure magic.

The war was over.

The people loved the bear. The bear loved the people. They showered the big brown beast with buns and sweets and his favourite — raspberry jam.

Wojtek danced. The soldiers danced. And for one glorious afternoon, the world felt light again.

And when the soldiers rested, they wrote home about the gentle giant who wandered further and further from their side.

In letters to wives, mothers, and daughters, the name Wojtek appeared again and again.

Some friendships are impossible to explain. You simply know them when you feel them.
