So skip the tourist traps and do spooky season like a local would. Here’s what we’d recommend instead 👉

The Royal Mile is packed with people selling ghost tours after dark. Some are worth it, especially the underground ones, but the good ones sell out weeks ahead. Our tip? Book early!

A ‘close’ is what Edinburgh calls its narrow Old Town lanes. Everyone queues for Mary King’s Close, but there are plenty of equally eerie ones you can explore for free. No ticket needed, no time wasted in queues.

For a proper Edinburgh Halloween, head to the Samhuinn Fire Festival on Calton Hill. Think fire, drums and Celtic mythology. It’s a local favourite for a reason. Afterwards, follow the crowds to a nearby pub and keep the night going.

Forget the overpriced haunted pub crawls. Edinburgh’s Old Town pubs have plenty of ghost stories of their own. Pick one in the Grassmarket, grab a pint and ask the bartender for their spookiest tale.
