Hello, James here… but not from Warren Farm for a change! 👋

Kate and I managed to escape the farm for a rare little break after what’s been quite a year!

We decided there was no need to travel abroad when we have so many beautiful places to explore right here in the UK. So here we are, enjoying a day on the stunning island of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, just off the Cornish coast.

And what a place! It was bsolutely glorious, especially for October!

Well, that’s a wrap on our 2026 season here at Warren Farm! 🎬🌿

And what a season it’s been!

We’ve had some fantastic times, welcomed so many lovely guests, shared plenty of laughs and made some wonderful memories along the way.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing, though. The news about Feather Down was certainly a challenge we weren’t expecting, particularly after 16 years of working together. But as with farming, you learn to take the rough with the smooth, adapt and keep moving forward.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has stayed with us this year, supported us, followed our adventures and been part of life here on the farm. And, of course, a massive thank you to all our wonderful team who work so hard behind the scenes to make it all happen.

We really couldn’t do it without you.

So, was 2026 fun? Absolutely! Would we do it all again? You bet!

Here’s to 2027 and whatever adventures it brings.

Brassica Update! It started off well, then looked like a complete disaster, and at one point we were wondering whether to reseed the whole field.

Thankfully, we decided to leave it alone, and I’m pleased to say it’s looking pretty good now! The kale is up past my knees, the weeds have died back and, apart from a few hungry caterpillars, it’s looking healthy.

Looks like we’ll have a decent crop for the lambs to graze later in the year… unless I get my way and put some cattle on it instead! 😂🐂🐂

Never a dull Sunday morning! Started off feeding the cattle, then spotted a Facebook post about some escaped sheep in Priddy… which, of course, turned out to be ours!

Got the dog and off we went. Sheep safely back where they belong, and now I’m out checking the rest of the flock on the Mendips.

Still, when you get views like this, there are worse ways to spend a Sunday morning! ☀

Earlier this year, we planted oats and red clover with the intention of making winter feed for the cattle. The weather had other ideas, so instead we grazed our lambs on it over the summer.

Now we’re trying something different. We’ve drilled a grass seed mix into the existing red clover, in the hope of establishing a new grass ley without having to start again in the spring.

If it works, happy days! If not, well, farming is all about trying new things and seeing what works.

A day off means different things to different people here at Warren Farm! 🐄🐑

Ollie’s off shearing for a few days (his idea of time off!), while I spent yesterday at the South West Dairy Show at the Bath & West Showground.

A cracking day catching up with friends and colleagues, seeing some new ideas and innovations, and doing an awful lot of talking! The mood was a little subdued with milk prices as they are, but still a great day out.

Back to it this morning, checking on the cattle and moving them around our mob grazing paddocks. We’re still experimenting with this approach, so we’ll see how it goes!

I was a little later getting out this morning, and I think it’s fair to say these guys noticed! They certainly weren’t shy about letting me know that breakfast was overdue… and the chickens were just as keen. 😂🐔

Last week Kate and I hosted an evening for the Mendip Hills National Landscape volunteers. We cooked up some Warren Farm meat, a few other bits, and some very nice desserts. Finished up on the glamping site with a quiz and campfire. Was a lovely evening.
