I’m down at Black Rock today, looking up through Velvet Bottom, a place with a lot more history to it than you might realise.

The valley we see today was shaped by centuries of lead mining, and some of the old stone dams here, once thought to date from the 1700s or 1800s, could actually be much older - possibly going right back to the Romans.

So next time you’re walking through Velvet Bottom, you could be walking through an industrial landscape nearly 2,000 years old.

Amazing what’s right on our doorstep!

This kale crop was hit by flea beetle earlier in the year, and after debating whether to remove it, I decided to leave it. Now, despite some w**d burden, the kale has come on much better than expected and will be usable for grazing. Patience and timely rain paid off!

Just out checking some of our cows and calves. We’ve actually got a bit of grass. It’s fairly dry, but it’s not too bad on this section of land.

All of these cows were vaccinated for Bluetongue earlier in the year, and we are also in the process of vaccinating some of our sheep due to the problems that were being experienced across the southwest. Fortunately, we’ve had no problems!

Not often you get to see your own farm from quite this angle… and even better to get a photo of him passing over one of the canvas lodges.

Special deliveries by hot air balloon are not currently available. 😁

Welsh Mule Yearlings Ready for Sedgemoor Breeding Stock Sale.

So these are forty of our Welsh Mule yearlings that will be going into this coming Thursday’s Sedgemoor breeding stock sale. All of these yearlings are on the Heptavac system. They’ve just been blue tongue vaccined, and they have, just been wormed as well. They have had no hard feed and have actually just been on grazing; on pretty rough stuff due to the weather as it is. But, they are a really bonny-looking group, very fit, very healthy, and will do someone absolutely proud - really good strong sheep. So yeah, they’ll be in Sedgemoor this coming Thursday 20th August, if anyone is interested.
