What's an ideal cosy night in?

With the clocks soon to go back and your need for cosying up after a day amongst autumn leaves and funny fungi grows stronger, our home cinema set up really comes into its own.

Rod's expertise in video design for live music and theatre - he created the visuals for Paulo Nutini's last few live tours if you happened to catch a show - mean not any old projector or massive tv will do (we trialed at least 2 before he was happy 😆)!

🎥 Your UHD (ultra high definition) visuals are combined with a large drop-down screen, surround sound from British-made Monitor Audio speakers, and black-out blinds to help immerse you in your movie experience. And the massive 'squishmeister' sofa and plenty of blankets make for ultimate comfort, too.

All your favourite streaming apps are available, so you can also stack a series or keep the kids entertained on rainy days and hide away a while.

🍿We're crafting a movie night add-on as we speak. Any suggestions for what you'd want in it? The popcorn research is going to be hard, but someone's got to do it 😉

This is us, as it's been a while, and we've had some new faces here...

Rod and I (Nemia) first met, fleetingly, when I was buying a Joanna Newsom gig ticket from him in a dark car park in Bristol circa 2005. We barely noticed each other.

Rod was doing arty/collectivey/filmy things with his creative pals. I was working for various arts organisations. I had itchy feet and headed to London.

Rod would turn up with a dear mutual friend looking for a London crash pad. Every few months, for a couple of years. He fixed the toilet in exchange. We still didn't pay much attention to each other.

Then one fateful weekend involving a delayed flight, a fish curry and a brilliant gig at Notting Hill Arts Club, the scene was set, and we finally noticed the other was there 💕 He was wowed by my London bus route knowledge. I was charmed by his cheeky-chappy-artsy ways.

Fast forward through 2 kids, a myriad creative, foodie, wellbeing and producer-type careers and we're here in the Forest of Dean, staring at a rainbow over a scrubby bit of grass below our bungalow during lockdown No.1. Tours, projects, retreat chefing gigs all cancelled. Businesses on hold.

The polymaths that we are, we wondered... what can we create that might bring our jack-of-all-trade talents together and allow us to share this soul-soothing view? And Nuthatch was born...

We wanted to combine maximalist joy with minimalist calm. Creative warmth with nature's magic. Connection: with yourselves, the landscape, the lives and people in it. No sh*t knives or terrible lighting. No sterile white bathrooms. No pine furniture and wipe-downable leather sofas. No soulless spaces. No ikea mugs. No crap scones from the 'local shop' not actually selling local produce...

So here we are, 3 and a bit years in, doing our Nuthatch thing. Rod invariably found with a lens, a disco ball, or secateurs in his back pocket. Myself with a chef, marketing or coaching hat on rotation, hot chocolate or fancy c***r in hand.

And our last couple of visitor messages capturing some of our intentions made real 💫

It's sunrise season!🌤
This time of year (and into winter), the drama of the sunrise is happening at a very sociable time indeed.
Enjoy the leisurely start you came for, make that first, not-too-early cuppa of the day and watch the light as it breaks on the hillside, and bathes the patio and the valley beyond in a golden glow.
Step outside, wrap yourself in a blanket to ward off any chill from the dew-filled air, soak up the sound of birdsong and bask in the autumnal rays. 🍂
Or, if it happens to be pouring down, feel cosy and smug inside, instead, and enjoy the drama of the clouds rolling by.
Either way, It's a soul-soothing start to the day.

Fully let go. Do you know how to do that?
Great to be reminded this week of how wonderful a float can be in aiding this, and the amount of Epsom salts needed is quite something 😄
It's rare in this life to be able to fully let go of every muscle in the body and be 'held' so softly and completely. Arms wide, all safe and warm. Drifting somewhere between awake and asleep.
It's quite the experience, and the closest I've known is from doing yoga nidra, if you know what that feels like? But this is next level. I could have drifted for hours in the darkness over at Float in the Forest - Feel Good & Enjoy Life. And the calm that stayed with me has carried me through a busy week 🩷
I haven't been for a long time - a classic case of forgetting to enjoy what's on your doorstep - but definitely wanting to go back for more and would highly recommend booking a slot during your stay. It's the perfect complement to fully switching off from the world at Nuthatch Retreat. Shari & Will are so passionate about the float experience, too, and have thought about all the details to make it easy.
They're just 15mins from us and perfectly located for a forest wander afterwards in your blissed out state 🌲

The sight of fantastic fungi doesn’t get old🍄
As the height of the season rolls around again, more and more are popping up. On fallen branches and nestled on the forest floor, you just have to keep your eyes peeled 👀
The magic of spotting the fruiting mushrooms just at the right time is always a joy and inevitably helps us find that childlike curiosity when enjoying a wander through the forest.
Not all are edible, of course, but we've seen chanterelle, oyster, and field mushrooms, to name a few. Just be sure to sign up with a foraging expert via Forest of Dean & Wye Valley if you're not 100% sure and want to learn more. Tudor Farmhouse | Boutique Hotel & 2AA Rosette Restaurant offer foraging lunches in October, which are an ideal way to do it.
Or just embace your inner kid and enjoy the sight of the multitude of mycelium you'll come across on your forest walks this time of year.
