Fantastic news! Another good reason to join the National Trust - park for free in any of their car parks on the North Devon coast. Croyde, Woolacombe, Mortehoe and now… gorgeous Lee Bay 🌊⛱️🥰

We’re pleased to share that we’ve acquired Lee Bay car park (Ilfracombe, EX34 8LW). This new space will support our commitment to caring for the North Devon coastline and improving access for visitors 🌿

The site is currently closed while essential improvement work takes place over the summer, in preparation for reopening in early autumn 2026.

We appreciate your patience while this work is underway.

🦌 This beautiful pair of roe deer have taken up residence at Butterhills.
Our guests have been seeing them wandering through the woodland and the stream meadow. This morning they were in our garden pruning the roses!
Not the best footage as I was trying to keep my distance and not spook them.
Such a lovely start to a beautiful spring day, so good to see the sunshine at last ☀️.

The woodland at Butterhills is looking especially magical right now. Everywhere you turn, the holly is dripping with bright red berries — one of the best displays we’ve seen in years. It’s been a mast year for acorns too, so the wildlife has been spoilt for choice with nature's larder!

Our Linhay guests have exclusive access to wander these peaceful woods, where the only sounds are birdsong and the crunch of leaves underfoot. The holly berries are already proving a feast for the birds, but with such an incredible bounty, we’re hoping there’ll be a few boughs left to bring into the house and the Linhay. Nothing says Christmas quite like a splash of red holly berries… feeling a little festive already 🎄🎄🎄

If each and every one of us did something small to help the insect population it would add up to something really BIG 🐞 🐝 🦋

This year we sowed a large swathe of wildflowers & planted pollinator friendly flowering plants in our veg beds… adding beauty 🌼 encouraging insects 🐝 and increasing our harvest 🍏 🫛🍓🍆

Yesterday, the UK’s leading insect conservation charities launched the Declaration on the UK Insect Declines Crisis at the Wild Summit UK 🚨

Led by Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, and Butterfly Conservation, and backed by over 60 signatories, this is a united front calling for change across governments, land managers, businesses, and the public.

Why it matters
🐝 Insects are essential for our world to function.
🐞 They pollinate crops and wild plants, recycle nutrients, maintain healthy soils, control pests, and form the base of the food web for birds, bats, fish, and other wildlife.

UK insect populations are plummeting
🐝 Bumblebees declined by almost a quarter (22.5%) in 2024 – the worst year on record since BeeWalk began.
🦋 Butterflies also had their worst year on record in 2024 and have struggled to bounce back in 2025, despite ideal weather – a sign of deep environmental stress.
🪰 Flying insects have fallen by almost two thirds (63%) since 2021, based on Bugs Matter surveys.
