Our history isn't just about preserving the past; it's about securing the future. Celebrating 50 years of conservation at Port Lympne Reserve.

For half a century, Port Lympne Reserve has been dedicated to protecting endangered species, advancing global breeding programmes, and supporting reintroduction efforts that return animals to the wild.

From humble beginnings to becoming one of Europe’s leading conservation reserves, our 50-year journey represents:
• Thousands of animals cared for
• Global breeding programme leadership
• Species saved from the brink of extinction
• Rewilding projects that continue to shape ecosystems today

This milestone is a celebration of every birth, every breakthrough, and every step toward a wilder future.

Did you know? Coatis use their long, flexible noses to forage for food and can even rotate their ankles to climb down trees headfirst.

Did you know? Unlike many wild cats, margays are so adapted to life in the trees that they can leap impressive distances between branches, using their long tails for balance as they move through the forest canopy.

Here is the beautiful Nero enjoying time in the sun, taking a well-earned moment to relax.

Ravindu was born at Port Lympne Reserve in 2011 and spent his entire life here, becoming a much-loved character among both keepers and guests.

A true Rusty-spotted cat, he may have been small in stature, but he more than made up for it with his sass, confidence and fearless personality.

Affectionately known as Vinnie by his keepers, he earned the nickname thanks to his top lip often catching on a canine tooth, giving him a permanently mischievous expression that looked as though he was always up to something!

As he entered his senior years, Ravindu began to slow down and was often found enjoying a nap in the sunshine on the highest platforms in his enclosure. Yet he never lost his curiosity, regularly coming over to climb the mesh and take part in encounters, proudly showing off the beautiful spotted belly that gives his species its name.

Sadly, as his health continued to decline and could no longer be managed with medication, the difficult decision was made to put Ravindu to sleep.

Living to the remarkable age of 15, Ravindu far exceeded the life expectancy for his species and leaves behind countless memories for those who knew and cared for him.

He will be deeply missed. ❤️🐾

Can you spot the dwarf mongoose at bear lodge?
It might be tricky, they’re masters of staying hidden!

Fun fact: dwarf mongooses are the smallest carnivores in Africa, typically only around 20–30cm long (about the size of a ruler!)

Next time you stay at Bear Lodge, keep your eyes peeled… you never know where they’ll pop up next

Keeping cool the best way possible

The squirrel monkeys have been enjoying some refreshing iced enrichment treats in the sunshine, and judging by the excitement, they were a big hit.
