🏡 Wales Visitor Levy - What does it mean for your stay?
From 1 April 2027, Cardiff will introduce the Welsh Visitor Levy for qualifying overnight accommodation.
For serviced accommodation such as our apartments, the rate is currently £1.30 per person, per night.
But there are important exemptions, particularly for work-related stays.
👷 Contractor & work stays
The Welsh Government confirms that overnight stays by employees, contractors and apprentices are exempt where they are staying in the accommodation as part of their job.
This is particularly relevant to the contractors and businesses who use Starlight Stays for projects across Cardiff.
🏠 Longer stays
A booking of 32 nights or more is also exempt from the Visitor Levy.
📅 When does it start?
Cardiff’s levy begins on 1 April 2027.
Accommodation providers will need to account for qualifying bookings made from 28 September 2026 for stays from 1 April 2027 onwards.
How will Starlight Stays manage this for our landlords?
As professional accommodation managers, we’ll handle the administration surrounding the levy on behalf of our managed properties.
This includes identifying applicable bookings, applying relevant exemptions and managing the required records and payments.
Our landlords shouldn’t have to worry about keeping up with another layer of accommodation administration — we’ll manage it as part of the day-to-day operation of their property.
For our guests, we’ll also ensure that applicable charges and exemptions are handled appropriately.
